Ok i have it down to a choice of three (after much searching and deliberation).

My computer is my main source of music so they have to be able to fill my room and sound good.

Im sticking with 2.0 or 2.1 as 5.1 is fiddly and annoying when you move once a year (im a student)

    Logitech Z-2300

AE Aego M - im willing to bet these give the best sound quality but they're a bit boring to look at!

Creative Gigaworks T40 - these are my faves aesthetically

These are 2.0 so im slightly suspicious of their bass ability, im not a speed garage lover or anything so bass isn't my first consideration but i'd like them to have a good rounded sound.

So any experience of the above? any advice for buying speakers?

Feels great as I have a chance here to advice, go for the Creative Gigaworks T40 dear, I got it last week for myself and it perfectly fitted my expectations. Some of the preferences of yours match with me so the Bass thing was not in my mind, my ear is loving the favorite sound tracks played from them.
The lexmark all in one printers is also one of my best possessions.

The Aegos are a bit long in the tooth now but won alot of awards, they sound great and if music is your main concern go with them 110%

yup I have the aego m and i love them. however two minor flaws:
you cant have both inputs playing at the same time
and the volume control is on the sub which is annoying if you have them on the floor...

i bought some of them at work, the design is lovable, the high- and mid-ranges sound great, but they don't perform too well (imho not at all) bass-wise
