i have a spare pc lying around based on an amd cpu 5200x2 cpu xfx 8200 motherboard 160GB maxtor hard drive xfx 9600 gso 768mb gpu dvd rw 550watt psu i know i have not got any memory in at present but can lay my hands on 2gig of ddr2 800mhz.I need some advice as i want to create my own cctv system using this pc ,needed for my work as i travel round the south and east a lot looking after pubs that are no longer trading, does anyone have any ideas of how to go about this(before you all start i know i will have to get a larger hard drive to record to).I have looked at some of the geasr available through Maplins but it always seems horribly over priced, any help and ideas will be gratefully received.
You could set up some webcams, and use a program to record the footage? Not sure on the ins and outs, but does it have to be a 'proper' CCTV system, or would a ghetto job be fine?
Webcams are not good enough ideally i want wireless cameras with good IR ability for night times had looked at IP cameras but would need to have a working broadband connection rather than the o2 dongle i have at present. This is only for my own piece of mind while at work and if the pc is hidden away properly and connected to my main system wirelessly i can check it out [plus from a safety point of view i would also have footage of any break ins or assaults etc to be handed to the police.
Its not a case of paranoia just an idea i have been thinking about and wondered if any one was able to help.At the end of the day it is just a way of me making use of a second pc rather than letting it sit and collect dust or trying to sell it on ebay or gumtree etc.
You could just put up big signs saying "CCTV in operation", or "Chuck Norris Protection Ltd.", would scare away most... Without spending big bucks, I don't think you're going to get what you're looking for. if you want 'night vision', get some of those out door lightas that come on when someone goes near them, set it so it's uber sensitive. That'll stop most as well. Only way I can see you getting anything close to what you want is spending money on webcams and lighting rigging for at night. Then again, I am no CCTV specialist. Can you hire equipment?
