ok guys heres the deal, im trying to set a home LAN up, ive installed both NICs and have a netgear FS105 switch that im connecting them together by. I have XP pro on my machine and ME on the downstairs machine. So why can they not see each other when i have run the wizard to set it all up. Any ideas are helpful.

have you set up the IP adresses and the workgroup??

on your machine (main machine/XP machine) set the ip adress under tcp/ip settings to 192.168.0.1 and the other machine to 192.168.0.2....once that is done try pinging each other across the network by going into dos and typing ping x.x.x.x....

if you cant get to see each other that way i would recommend checking the drivers for the nic cards....

also upgrading the me machine to win2k or to xp would make i a lot easier....

    hope this helps....

make a copy of the xp cd...

cause it says that when you ping the computers it could mean a couple of things:
    a) you havent set the ip adresses up properly
    b) your cable/s dont work
    c) your hub/switch dont work

check the ips first...then test the cables with some that u know that work, ie test em on a mates lan or at work or somethin...

I recently ran XP Pro and I found the network setup wizard v. annoying. I couldnt get my 2k machine to see my XP machine, but I figured out the problem, heres a checklist of things to check...

Make sure that your workgroups are the same.

Check that the XP built in firewall is not on, if it is, turn it off and get Tiny Personal Firewall.

Put IPX on anyway, if your like me and like the regular Counter-Strike game over a network and one of your mates has tcp/ip problems, then IPX is always handy to have, and there is no considerable speed difference with the HL engine :D

Make sure your network card is installed properly, check the device manager and make sure there isnt an error with it

    Hope that helps

you dont even need the switch if its just two computers just use a rollover cable and plug it into the two nic's and your good to go, set the IP's AND CHECK THE SUBNETMASK they need to be the same!!!!!!

if you do use the hub/switch then you need 2 straight through cabels, these are what you usually get, you can tell by looking at the clear ends if both plugs have the colors wired in the same order in the same direction your good to go.

make sure your conections are seated properly if the cabels are loose then that can be problematic. workgroups need to be the same.

i cant think of anything else at the moment but if i do ill let you know

Cisco has something called a rollover cable, that's why. I believe crossover cable is related to rj45->rj45 network cable, whereas rollover cable is used to connect the BMM console port to a console terminal or modem.

    Cheers.

a roolover cable is something that a cisco router uses in its first stages to be configed. It is a small telephone like cable that attaches(using and adapter) from the COM port to the RJ-11 port on the back of cisco products they usually called console ports
