£600 won't buy you an i7 gaming rig with a monitor, keyboard and mouse. A socket 1366 motherboard, 3gb of budget DDR3 RAM and an i7 920 will set you back about £450 alone.

Unless you can raise your budget quite considerably, you will be better off going for a CoreDuo setup. Do you have any parts that you could reuse to save money? like a case or DVD drive etc?

    Approx. Core i7 pricing:
    920 - 2.66Ghz - £240
    940 - 2.93Ghz - £470
    965 - 3.20Ghz - £780

So yea, lol.. would you be happy to overclock? the 920 can reach 3Ghz without breaking a sweat.

Well I could help you spec up a system but it would be a lot easier if you gave us an actual price you want to spend and we can go from there :)

Also, you might want to ask a mod to move this thread to an appropriate board.

ooo switch the motherboard to the X58- UD3R its cheaper and a good overclocker. should be around £150-160.

also drop the 1600mhz RAM and get cheaper 1333mhz RAM it will make very little difference on performance unless your planning heavy overclocking.

what about the OS ??? that will set you back another £80-£85

That monitor's not much cop either tbh. What's the point in a good system if the graphics look like ass because of a cheap monitor?

+1 that system is design for 22" screen (1680x1050) minimum

personally id opt for a better PSU and case as well. Nothing wrong with the case really but would you really put a Ferrari engine in a ford fiesta !!!!

a case with better cooling such as the Antec 300 would be better if you wanna keep costs down a bit.

Ok ok.. I wasn't telling him that he should buy that lot right away, I was just giving him a rough spec to compare against factory build PCs and those on ebay that he has been looking at.

If you go with Vista and an i7 setup, make sure to get the 64-bit version and 6Gb of RAM.

wouldnt touch ebay with barge pole for 2 reasons

    1.NO WARRANTY

    2. whos to say the hardware isnt faulty or mislabelled.

The normal P6T is average anyway plus:

    i7 920 - £232.50 (3 year warranty)
    gigabyte X58 UD3R - £154.30 (3 year warranty)
3GB CORSAIR DDR1333 - £51.87 (lifetime warranty) (6GB would be better though IMO)

    TOTAL: £438.67 + Del. (around £7-10)

    pfffft TAKE THAT CRAPBAY

all prices from scan.co.uk - may find it cheaper at other etailers

    as for your other kit:

as long as the HDD is the WD BLUE series 640GB not the GREEN series then its fine (green is slow very slow)

285 is a waste of money try a 275 or a 4890 both of which are more than enough for your 22"

The PSU is very overpriced by at least £30.

    try this: 620W CORSAIR HX - £99.61 from scan.co.uk

    or 650W be quiet - £105.56 from scan.co.uk

as for OS get vista 64 XP is a waste to buy now, ok if you already got a copy but dont buy it new

Scan is usually pretty cheap and they're a really good shop too - efficient and reputable. I'd rather spend a few extra quid there than some dodgy ebay shop that may well rip you off. :)

a e8400 or a e7400 would easily be enough for what you are going to do
