After my first few tentative steps into linux, I seem to be up against a brick wall.

SuSE installed fine, and works great. I've got the internet access shared to the linux machine and all the software which comes with SuSE is working.

However I tried to install xchat (I'm told this is a good IRC client for linux) and then when using yast to install it, it pops up saying that I need GTK+. I've found the GTK+ website, and have tried to download the file that I need, but I'm really confused as to which file is actually necessary, since it seems there are about seven version of each different file on their server.

If anyone could point me in the right direction (as in the actual file, I've had a good look around the GTK website) and anything else you think I might need to install basic software I'd be very grateful. :thumb:

What does it specifically ask for?

Also SuSE doesn't have a C compiler installed as default, nor is it on the cd, so you'll need to add an FTP yast source and grab it from there.

Yast is also pretty good for installing things you don't know much about too; just type the name of the package you're after and it should return a result, then just tick the box and install.

Install GTK using YaST as well. ;)
Just go to install programs, search, GTK, tick it, accept, you'll be asked for CD or DVD and you're done, GTK is installed, no need to download it. ;)

    I recommend KVIRC tough. :)

Thanks for the tips...trying these at the moment.

I tried using Yast to download gtk (specifically gtk2 2.4.2) and yast updated it, but I still get the same message when trying to install xchat.

Tried installing xchat without this, and it went through alright, but then when I start up the program, I get the window to enter nick details and the server, then I click connect and the window disappears.

Thanks to ST8, j4ck and acrim on #bit-tech, got it sorted! :thumb:

Just needed to add an FTP source to Yast and install it that way.
