Bought new processor and hard drive from komplett and installed it all. It worked fined after installing windows xp but the CPU temps were way to high. After choosing the new heat pipe HSF from cooler master it arrived a few days later. Changed the heatsink and all was well but temps still a little high and way way to noisey. Changed the fan with an akasa 6 to 8cm fan adapter and put an evercool one on. Turned the system on and bugger. The hard drive spins then stops as with my cd-rom and dvd, the monitor comes on and then goes back off.

Ive tried everything and still i get the same prob. Have i crushed the chip beyond recognition? or is it another a problem?

Yeah ive done that also took everything out and put it back in. Some one told me it might be the graphics card but i dont think it is as the computer would still boot up as normal but it isnt.

Are you getting any error codes at all? Does anything come on the screen before it goes off? Have you got another chip you could try, that may help to eliminate possible causes?

have you got details of the power supply?

if the monitor runs from the psu, then the fact that the monitor switches off and the drives don't spin up means it could be a borked psu. perhaps cuz the fan took to much power, or shorted it out.

do the fans spin up at all?

it could be the procesor or PSU.

as jamie said, have you got any other hardware so you can debug this problem ?

have u taken the cpu out at all to see whether it is burned out or not...ussually this can be seen by the burn marks and black residue....

    All is well again

Thanks guys, after a quick trip to the local pcworld to borrow a new processor the computer is up and running again. The broken chip doesnt have any marks on it but does have a faint mark around the core. Is this what you mean by burning or is it just how the chip is made as i can see it on an old thunderbird chip (also broken) thats laying around. Now just lets hope PC world give me a refund and dont notice its a different chip!

Reading ya last post .... seems to me that u must have fried ya CPU. Did u remove the HSF to install the 60->80mm fan adapter? If u did ... did u reply any thermal paste?

When you say "temps still a little high" how high might that be? Must CPU heat problems are poor contact wiv the HSF and CPU. Especially since the heatpipes of the CM's can get caught on caps and RAm slots.

Yeah I have some CM thermal paste which i used, the temps are around 46 with no extra fans and 38 With all fans running at average use. Thats with out the fan adapter i havent tested it with the fan adapter as im too scared ill bust another CPU.

Temps were taken with the onboard sensor, unsure of how reliable the temps actually are.

get some decent thermal paste, ie Artic Silver 3...if you are spending that kinda of money on your cpu i think it would be worth buying decent thermal paste...and if you are afraid of breaking another cpu, get a shim to stop you from physically braking it, and im sure you should be able to set up your bios to shut down before the cpu burns out....

    then youd be safe...hopefully...:sigh:

im surprised at those temps - cos although im running a lower MHz rig than you (xp1600+) im getting 25*c idle from my chip with a coolermaster HCC001 planted on its bonce and Artic Silver 2, 24*c sometimes depending on the heat of my bedroom.

might be the motherboard being weird...btw that heatsink is not one of the safe ones....

Uumm I'm not sure whether its the mobo sensors playin up ...since Abit sensors are reknown to be more accurate than other Manuf (Asus are accuarate to +- 7*C :eeek: )

My hunch is the HSF isnt makin full connect wiv the core.

How many fans are u running in ya case? Have u taken readings wiv the case door off?

Im using a thermal paste from coolermaster i got from maplins, I have a maximum of 5 case fans + PSU exhaust. That gives me 30 degrees case temp however the airflow is restricted as the computer back is against the wall with a bout a 3 inch gap. For some reason if with the case door and the computer in the middle of the room the temps only go down by about 2 anyway.

I think ill definately get a shim and try some new thermal paste.

Does anyone know if theie are any blue color shims out there?
