Hey, I am at Uni now and I have a pretty nice connection. The only problem is the ports for irc and outlook express have been blocked. Does anyone know how to get around this, would it be with the use of a proxy server? Thanks
That is strange, unis do not normaly block the ports for outlook. At my uni we can use irc with no problems. I would go and talk to your system admins who will tell you the setting you need, seeing as most unis have a large amount of firewalls.
If the sysadmins have blocked the ports for Outlook Express (which uses the same standard ports as any other mail client) chances are they've done it for a damn good reason. Have a chat to them by all means, but I'd say your chances of being granted access are pretty thin A proxy server can help get around some issues with web surfing; it's not really appropriate for mail and IRC and the like. Good luck kata
A lot of IRC clients will work through a SOCKS proxy, or wingate. Try running a google for either of those. EDIT: Just found this: http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Heights/5445/socksserver.html It might be just what your looking for... ~Sepherus
You might wanna try this software http://www.http-tunnel.com/HT_Products_HTTPTunnelClient.asp My mates use it on their uni network to get full speed downloads on kazaa and win mx. Without this, the kazaa and win mx ports are blocked. It works you can try the demo version
hi guys, thanks for your help. Im at Exeter Uni doing comp science. Would anyone know a good proxy to use? I havent got any and results on google didnt show anything that good......
Not sure if my school is different, but our Computer center rarely does anything for good reason! (I've had many problems in the past that have had responses such as "I'd call it more of a condition than a problem")
good thing i got into my CF, wouldn't have liked irc being blocked edit: (exeter for compsci was my CI)
Bypassing Uni Firewalls Middlesex University firewall also has all the ports except port 80 blocked and smtp and pop and ftp of course so to get stuff working you can goto www.download.com and download Socks2Http or Http-Tunnel. Http-Tunnel rocks though the free version sux0r and is slow (so pay man its only 3-4 quid a month) and Socks2Http is FAST but is highly unstable so dont pay for it. Thats it guys please if anyone willing to sell Http-Tunnel keys ill be glad to buy em please email me. Thanx. - Vikram
Proxies For Http Tunnel Well just use yur uni proxy server because it just needs web access then it will automatically use Http tunnels socks server. If your uni has no proxy server then make sure you tick the box "Firewall only no proxy" in settings. That should do the trick......... Btw what uni you study in ? - Vikram
Exeter, night life is wicked, people are really cool, but my net connex is buggered and comp science is a bit boring.....
Hey you study comp science ? Do you know any first year students doing a 1200 word essay on the Future of computing in 21st century or some related topic ? Any help would be appreciated.........
Have a troll around the BBC tomorrows world website - I know a few months back (or even a year) they were going on about 'organic computing' using the nerve endings from slugs to do computation - pretty scarey/wierd but it worked, so they say..
