Hi, first thanks for taking the time to read this as im a dumb blond lol :thumb:

anyway i recently upgraded my system to this:

    msi k8n neo 2 platinum
    512mb ram (corsair value 3200) cas 2.5
    110GIG maxtor HDD
    galaxy glacier 6800gt
    tagen 480w psu

my question is about ram, in my old comp i had 2x256mb single sided ddr266mhz cl2.5 pc2100 (i think) thats whats on the sticker anyway... if i put it in my new rig would it be worth it? or should i just save for some more pc3200??

    thanks again

    Lucy

Stay away from putting anything below PC3200 in an A64 rig, as it runs at a default 200MHz bus speed and anything less will slow down your entire system. I'd try selling the PC2100 and buying another stick of 512 for dual channel :)

Watch it though, s754 has no dual-channel support. However, I do have 2x 512MB ghehe. When I upgrade that'll be my RAM and then I'll have dual-channel goodness naughty:

There's a S754 and S939 version of that board, it's not possible to tell which she has from the given information...I just assumed it was 939 as that's the board I have :p

yeah its 939 socket, sorry i forgot to mention that :duh: looks like ill have to buy some more

i do have 1 more quick question tho, in the bios thing theres an option to overclock using the dynamic overcloking feature, i tried it but my pc froze 2 mins after xp loads in and i think its because of the memory, so what memory should i get? i can stretch to £200 for 1gig or should i just leave it and get 512mb of the same thats already in there??

    thanks again

    Lucy

;) The Athlon64 isn't actually killed by very slow RAM like PC2100 (gaming is generally hit by less than 10%) but given how cheap RAM is it doesn't make any sense at all. 512MB of Corsair Value PC3200 CL2.5 is fine so just add a 2nd stick of it to enable Dual Channel. Don't bother with the Dynamic O/c'ing Technology, disable it and then do things for yourself, it's much better. Out of interest what CPU are you running?

that ram looks fine, but rember your looking at ordering from scam, and last time i checked they still charged 10 pounds for p&p...

whereas if you go to the crucial website (crucial.com) and go to the uk section, you can buy crucial ram, with free delivery

:hip: Crucial's RAM is excellent and comes with a lifetime warranty AND if you use the memory selector tool guarantees compatiblity. However their standard PC3200 is CL3.0, slower than you'd really want while their marvelous but expensive Ballistix PC3200 is CL2.0 which wouldn't be able to operate optimally with your existing CL2.5 stick. Ideally you want CL2.5 although CL3.0 is okay and CL2.0 would have a little potential for the future. I'd suggest checking out www.komplett.co.uk for a good range of well priced RAM (typically £6 P&P).

;) I wouldn't be worried about ordering from Scan as I'd certainly rate them above Aria, eBuyer and MicroDirect which are all popular enough.

:thumb: In terms of o/c'ing it's well worth it, esp given your WC 64_3000+ stands are very decent chance of hitting 64_3800+ speed or better. It's not overly complex, when you feel ready make a specific post about it, ideally after you :search: .
