    $3500?
BUY IT. BUY ALL OF IT.

    i7 980X
    5870 (5970?)
all the RAM you can carry  6GB should be good.
    ALL OF IT.

Would it be too much to try phase change cooling?

    For those unwilling/too lazy to convert - $3500 NZD = $2500 USD = £1600 GBP.

So let's not go too overboard, especially as I believe components are more expensive in NZ than the US or UK.

I'd suggest an i7 930, Asus P6TD, Corsair H50, 6GB (12GB?) RAM, GPU depending on Fermi prices (GTX 470/5850?). Not sure on micro ATX cases TBH.

Well he did write NZ. Still, that should be more than enough for a nice X58 rig.

The main issue on building a rig is that prices in new zealand wont be as simple as just converting the prices. Where would you buy them?

Their supposed to be releasing Rampage III tomorrow, you could look into that. Also i7 980X, the rest is up to you.

Assuming (yes, this may be a pretty big assumption) that hardware is it at least similarly priced: an i7 930 w/ decent mobo/PSU/RAM, quality (though not outlandish) case and 5870 and SpinPoint F3 1TB + 60GB boot SSD should fit into 2500USD. If New Zealand prices really are too harsh you can cut the SSD. I specced one such system in at 2000USD on newegg.com, and note that I included a new PSU and HDD+optical drives even though they are not needed. Also note that an i7 980X will add 800USD, removing the SSD would take off 250USD. If the OP does indeed re-use all possible parts and the prices are equivalent an i7 980X could be possible but it's not a given like many are suggesting.

Yeh NZ New Zealand $$. parts over here are a lot more costly.

Not wating to go water cooling or phase.

    Yep to multi displays. 1x 22" and 1x 32"

Only need the 1 hdd in pc as i have a HP storageworks x510 NAS server on its way to me and looking at getting 4tb for it.
