Hi, i was wondering if DIY cable sheilding would actually benefit my sound-system in anyway? My stack system runs next to my TV and PC, with all the power cables and plugs for everything about a meter below them. This no doubt generates a little interferance and white noise. I was thinking of wraping the cables in foil and chicken mesh secured by zip ties, would this kind of shielding have any benefit? or am i barking up the wrong tree?
What your essentually creating is a faradays cage arround the cables. These are VERY affective at stopping EMF emminating from the cables and thus reducing interferance. Chicken wire would work but tin foil is easier to wrap round the cables. Make sure that there are no rips in the foil and that one end is connected to the earth pin in your plug (top pin in UK power plugs). Thats the only requirement for it to work and as long as the foil dosent have any breaks in the length of the cable that will reduce the EMF from the power cables. The white noise in the 50Hz range will be reduced as that is the frequency that the UK mains runs at. To save on time you can wrapp all the power cords together but make sure that wires that have different data streams running down them do not get wrapped together (i.e. ethernet with audio)
