My computer BSOD on booted today again, this is over the 20th time i have had to re-install windows for a bsod on boot prroblem this year and, as you can imagine, I'm getting ****ing pissed off with it. I made an Emergency Repair Disk THREE DAYS before this happened and yet the information on the disk "is not valid" and i can't repair my install with it.

    I'm running Win2000.

Its always a corrupt or missing file/entry and often something relating to the registry, in the software section.

I NEED to know how to stop this, i've tried a new psu, formatting, reformating, etc etc and still nothing.

If nessacary i will replace the whole machine and even switch OS to Linux

Please, please, please can anyone help me with this.

    Thanks in advance,

have you tested any other parts of the computer? it might not be the PSU or the HDD, it could be anything. Also have you tried another opperating system on that setup, it might be your copy of 2000 or incmpatabilities (unlikely i know). Are you sure the drivers you are using are good, stable ones? i usta get bsod's from dodgy detonator drivers, if in doubt get the most up-to-date one's or the ones you have had no problems with.
Hope any of this helps, problems like this do suck when they happen.

Do you just notice this happening after a while or are you installing/uninstalling something when it happens? Also, can you sucessfully boot in safe mode? I've had problems like that with windows 9x systems where for no apparent reason the OS just loses/corrupts files. I even had it happen on NT4.0 once. But 2000 has been solid for me. :wallbash: <-- me knocking on wood...well the closest smilie I had to it.

EDIT: Oh...just remembered....I also had something like that happen to me when I tried to set the AGP Apperature in the BIOS to 256. But that was on my old ECS motherboard.

Its not a cooling problem, this time is was a damaged registry file, the path pointed to 'software'.

A few problems sometimes occur before it, a buch of corrupt files to do with an msnmessanger 'listcache' and this time something to do with an outlook express registry error.

No luck in safe mode, the same thing happens :(.

A BSOD with Software" mentioned would almost certainly be a corrupt Registry Hive. Could be caused by quite a few things.

If you could get hold of a copy of ERD Commander or something like that (they do have 30 day evaluation versions I think), then you can view the Event Log and see if there's anything in there that gives a clue.

Really sucks that it happens in Safe Mode too.

Speaking from experience here, check that your HDD's cable is OK. I had a damaged pin on one of mine and that was causing it to BSOD left right and centre with totally unhelpful messages.

Perhaps you should perform maintenance on a regular basis, just a suggestion of course. One registry file fragmented that little too much and it could all be screwed...

Its mentioned 'the hive file' (sounds like something from a horror movie) a few times now, i've reinstalled again now, but i'll be sure to get ERD commander if, who am i kidding?, WHEN it happens again. The drive i'm on at the moment is SATA, cable looks okay, but i've swapped it just to be safe. Cheers for the help.
