I am honestly not sure, but what effect would this have? I thought Windows would check the product key against a database hidden in it's system files, can't see how a hard drive change would stop it working
someone else using the key wouldnt cause an invalid key only failed to authenticate notice. unless the key has been used lots of times on different machines which would cause MS to de-activate the key
This. Large OEMs have special license systems. Retail discs doesn't always work for some reason. Just try to activate, then choose the phone option when that fails. Call the number and do as the annoying answering machine says. (You basically have to type a ridiculously long number, then you get a new long number to type.)
if you use a mobile, you will get the option to have the number sent by text - dont try and use it more than once, its a one time only for that specific machine
why is everyone missing the point. HIS KEY IS >>> INVALID <<< not just failing to authenticate as what usually happens when you start re-installing OEM and you ring the automated MS line and job sorted.
Triple check the key on the label. Perhaps your near eyesight isn't too good The 8's and B's do look the same. It should say Product Key: XXXXX - XXXXX - XXXXX - XXXXX - XXXXX What else is on the label? Does it say Windows Vista Home Premium OEMAct Toshiba ?
Exactly, I cannot get an activation code because I don't have a valid product key. Just got off the phone to Toshiba, he said that I have the wrong recovery disc for this machine? (Read him a Toshiba number printed on the disc) even though the disc says Vista Home Premium? Reckons I have to buy a new one from Toshiba? Any other way round this?
I have triple checked the label, it's in very good condition entirely readable, I did think a J could have been a worn U but U isn't used in product keys. And yes it says Windows Vista Home Premium OEMAct Toshiba
Not unless you can find the recovery disc that goes with that PC. Is the cost of the replacement recovery disc from Toshiba less than the cost of a new copy of the O/S? Windows 7 64bit OEM is around £75.
