I have a mac, a 1TB Western Digital Network Drive and I cannot get time machine to do a backup on this drive. I have entered this "defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1" into terminal so that the mounted network drive would show up. I start the time machine backup and then it fails before it can even start. It tries to start for about 2 minutes and then errors out. I am uncertain what the problem is. Please help if you have any suggestions.

    Thanks

I've heard some issues with regards to the reliability of the network connections on those drives. Does it work fine for everything else?

I've been meaning to try this tip for a while, and I've just tried it. So far it seems to be working well - Backed up 200Mb so far from my Powerbook to the (painfully slow) mybookworld II (1tb). The only thing I can think of is that you have incorrect permissions for the share on the mybookworld?

    Do you get this error?

"the backup disk image could not be created"

If so, a bit of googling has found a solution, HERE:

I'm just trying it now. So far, so good.
