Y'see...This is one of the reasons why I hate Creative...

    Okay, here's the problem:

I'm trying to install a Creative Soundblaster Live! Value into my dad's Win98 PC (PII MMX 350).

Install seemed to go okay using downloaded drivers but when I checked in device manager, SB Audio PCI 64v Legacy Device and Wave device for Voice Modem both have yellow exlamation marks.

    Trying to reinstall drivers now.

It’s called banging…Go into the properties of the banged device (soundcard) and see what windows is complaining about. Make sure the card comes up during system post and is sharing an IRQ with another device.

Sounds like the Creative version of onboard audio to me that does  I am presuming he was using onboard audio before? Check its disabled properly (this may require BIOS settings, a jumper on the motherboard, or both).

The yellow exclamation marks are presumably because 'the device cannot find any free resources' or 'this device did not start' - this will be down to some IRQ or I/O adress conflicts between the new SB Live card and the onboard (having two different sound cards in a system that aren't designed or tested to both work together is such a PITA).

From the two SB Live cards I've had (1024 and 5.1 Live, both long gone thankfully :D) I can't remember anything like an SB Audio PCI 64v Legacy Device being listed under device manager when the cards are installed, but I seem to recall some onboard audio was the SB 64v....admittedly that was long ago, but the SB Audio PCI 64v was most certainly an onboard device....

http://www.soundcard-drivers.com/drivers/28/28604.htm (drivers for the SB Audio PCI 64v, not that you'd want them..just to show that this to me seems certain to be an onboard device of some sort).

It was onboard audio...Sorted now though.

I rebooted and suddenly thought 'onboard audio!' and hit delete.
