Hello, I was given a iPhone 3gs by my brother in law and he set it all up for me, however lately it has been running really slow. So I thought the best option would be to reset/restore to factory settings then update to the newest firmware that I can get. I didn't want to jump into simply clicking in iTunes restore to factory settings then realise for some reason I can't access my phone or if I upgraded to 4.2 I wouldn't be able to unlock... etc etc. As you can see I don't have much experience but it's all quite confusing which software you should or shouldn't get. I've looked on http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ but I can't see to work out what bundles of software I need. TL'DR: Need to reset/restore iPhone, then install latest software. I don't need jailbreak as I don't use the software and I don't know if my phone is unlocked by default (I'm with Vodafone). What do I need to do? Current version "4.0 (8A293)" Carrier vodafnoe UK 7.1 Modem firmware 05.13.04 Thanks for your time on this!
so you are asking about how to jailbreak? or are you asking about how to fix your iphone's slowness? im confused, what exactly is your objective?
Sorry I should have been more clear. I want to make my iPhone run a little faster - I'll give you an example of how slow my iPhone is - when I receive a text message, I press 'view', I wait around 10-15 seconds and then the messaging program just 'crashes' and goes back to the main screen. If I receive a phone call, I swipe as usual to pick up the call, the screen will go black and I can't hear anything nor can the other person here me and so sometimes the other person has hung up before I can actually talk to them. Therefore to make it run faster I thought I might as well restore to factory settings then install the latest software. But I don't know if my phone is 'unlocked' or not and whether if I restore to factory settings it would delete the unlock, if I already had one, and then upgrading to the latest firmware would/could stop me from being able to put an unlock back on (again if I needed it) Therefore I need some advice to what I should do to proceed with this! If you need more clarification just ask! Thanks.
make sure you can search for Apps, go to global search and search for Cydia. if you have got that app, your phone is jailbroken. i am not familiar with 4.2 as i have not done it on my iphone 4 yet. but i believe you will loose your unlock IF you are relaying on the unlock. you can try to update to 4.1 though. download PwnageTool and 4.1 firmware, then follow Pwnage Tool to create your own firmware. now you should restore to that firmware, then in Cydia, install Ultrasnow to get your unlock back.
Hi, Yeh my phone is already jailbroken. Does anyone else know how to find out if my phone has or hasn't been "unlocked"? Thanks!
In cydia have a look at what apps are installed, I don't know all the unlocks as much anymore but read whats installed, if any refer to unlock, uninstall, if you lose network thats probably it (you can reinstall after on wifi) What wuyanxu says should work, if it is jailbroke already then unpading with customer firmware is good. BUT Running slow, am confused how it is anything firmware based, maybe on the 3G but the 3GS is better hardware but give it ago anyway "redsn0w" is the main program I use for customer firmware
Have a look and see if cydia has Ultrasnow installed in the packages section. If it has, you will need to be careful as it is unlocked. You can update but only to 4.1 it you are using an unlock. Have a look at this and it will walk you through the process. I have a 3Gs and I'm on the latest 4.2 firmware and I don't have any issues with crashing although my jailbreak is tethered. -J
Can anyone help I have a 3g iphone running 4.2 software is it possible to unlock. If not is there any way I can revert back to 4.1 Real novice at this and have spent £70 already trying to get the answer. Would be most grateful for any help.
