My CPU useage according to Windows is alarmingly high and alarmingly slow too, I've never seen it go above 50% so why it's reading 100% now I don't know, it's been like it for the kast 6 hours, I've rebooted, rebooted and even shut down but it still says 100%. Turned off all programs starting up that I don't need and it still reporting 100%

You haven't added any new hardware or drivers?, it could be that. Or if you've added any HLT programme then that will put it up, not that you need a HLT programe as windows XP does this.

The only new bit of hardware added is my CDRW drive as the old 1 died, and all was fine upuntil yesterday, no drivers required and I'm very careful about what I install. I have a feeling that when I let one of my friends use my computer they accpted something from Gator, although there is no evidence of it on my machine yet.

Stupid question, but have you ran a virus scan?
Something similar happened to me and turned out to be a worm.

The best thing to do here is probably to run a decent virus scanner , like Norton Antivirus , not just run the bog standard windows one . I would also advise unistalling then re-installing all of your cards and peripherals (don't do anything that will lose your files)

Norton is what I got when I bought my PC .
Actually , on the subject of Norton , what can I do about Norton Ghost running on a network . My Dad has put it on my home network (we share a modem between three PC's) . If I want to run the internet , my dad gets to see what Im looking at (Not that theres anything dodgey to see , but you know what it is like) . So what can I do ? Short of buying my own modem
