There is a high pitch screech coming from my cpu (phenom 9950). I can deffiently say that it is the cpu as I have taken the case apart and found the source. I have also noticed the volume of the noise changes as I either open a programme or change the frequency of the chip via AMD overdrive.
I havn't overclocked the cpu and it is running at stock speeds, heat is not a issue as I am using a Corsair H50. Im just wondering what is causing this and if I can RMA it becuase of this problem.

    Thanks.

I remember by gfx card doing this before when it was trying really really hard.

Try underclocking it, just to see what effect that had, and make sure the cooling is seated properly as well.

Sounds like a squeaky choke coil or a leaky cap. What motherboard do you have?

you should be able to RMA it (i RMAd a squealing motherboard once), but first confirm that it is the proc that's squealing and not the motherboard. there's lots of stuff on a mobo that can squeal, but it's very uncommon for a processor to do it.

    motherboard is a GA-MA770-UD3 Rev 2.0

I have listened closer and the sound seems to be coming from the cpu area on the board, heatsink is mounted properly and i have taken the cpu out of its socket dusted and put back. When i underclock to 1000mhz on all 4 cores the sound stops or either goes supersonic and i cant hear it, but this might be the frequency change (cpu) or voltage change (mobo caps).

roll some paper into a tube (Or eat some smarties) and use that next to your ear to narrow down the area you are listening to.

It's most likely to be the PWM Circuitry near the CPU, I had the exact issue prior to one of them falling off the board...
