Little rant incoming. Is it just me or has the internet gotten a lot more vile over the last few years?

I used to go to 4chan, I used to laugh at a lot of memes, Pepe used to be just a fun reaction image, /pol/ used to be a joke and was universally regarded as a "containment board" for trolls and nutjobs. Yes, 4chan was trash and knew it was trash. At worst they would send gore to children or something - which, just to be clear, is a reprehensible thing to do, but on a whole other level than "let's dedicate ourselves to ruining some people's lives!". This isn't even "for the lulz" anymore, it's dead serious. And now it seems that what used to fester within /pol/ has overflowed into all other parts of the internet.
I won't list all the dozens of examples I can think of but right now Youtubers with 100.000s of subscribers (often ironically ones claiming to be 'neutral' and 'rational') are vocally approving and encouraging "vigilante" doxing tactics like the above. The literal Nazi conspiracy theory of "Cultural Marxism" is more popular than ever on the internet. Heck, Nazi apologism in general is more popular than ever (again, on some big youtube channels for instance). "White genocide" has become something a lot of actual people are furious about. On sites with a generally cheerful atmosphere like Imgur disgusting comments about "rapefugees" can get hundreds of upvotes. "Hitler did nothing wrong" is no longer a statement you can automatically assume to be facetious (though it still is for the most part of course). All /pol/ stuff, which you can now find everywhere.

Am I wearing rose-tinted glasses? Did I just not notice how terrible the internet was before?
Probably, but the state of the internet nowadays depresses me.

Stop calling them alt-right, that just makes them sound more acceptable. Use correct terms to describe them, call them for what they are - neo-nazis.

 

Apologies, I didn't intend to make it sound more acceptable, the problem I see with calling them neo-nazis is that they are often supporting Israel, which I don't really see as compatible with a term that has nazi in it, dunno, maybe neo-kkk or something like that would be more appropriate.

That budget most likely won't pass as even Republican politicians are smelling that it is pure bs.

But the reaction from some of the die hard Trump supporters on social media and such is comical, apparently things like health care for the elderly is a disgusting liberal snowflake plot to destroy the country
