just ordered this hitachi deskstar 7k3000 3TB SATA III hdd for £100 anyone got one? anyone had a hitachi hdd before ? iv only had W.D and samsung thanks in advance
Not used anything by them for about 8-9 years, but they were very reliable... Otherwise, where did you find the 3TB version for £100??? Simply that all of the usual suspects (eBuyer, Scan, etc) seem to be around the £140 mark, & Eclipse appears to be the cheapest at £134.04 (inc postage).
I assume that is the ex-VAT price. To the OP... why ask for opinions about components, including value for money, when you are quoting prices most people here cannot achieve?
it is the ex-vat price, i quoted that price because thats how much £ the products will cost me. so i would like an opinon based on cost to me as its more relevant then usual shop cost. if you want ex-vat prices open a company or a charity
I own more than one company already... that's not really the point is it... How can the majority give you a valid opinion when they can't achieve that price themselves? Unless you just want to gloat that you get stuff cheaper than other people...?
its nothing about gloating all im doing is guessing afew peoples opinions of high-end components can change with price. e.g i7 950 was unheard of before the price drop. sorry if it sounds like gloating.
its more a case of this is costing x but is y (the next model up) worth the extra £ ? any benefits or problems with the particular model
The Hitachi is currently the cheapest 3tb at the moment at £140 for us VAT paying mortals.... There are quite a few reviews around the web comparing with other makes of 3tb drives if thats what your looking for. Here's one......... http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/display/3tb-hdd.html Edit: If your looking for other user experiences it depends what you intend to use for .e.g boot drive in PC or in server/NAS. If NAS drive, try the Synology forums where there are users with 4 or 5 of those drives in their NAS boxes.
tbh i was more concerned that you'd inadvertently bought a 2TB one - well, the first link i cam across didn't state the size in the specs & was £100... it was only by further investigation that i found out. it would be useful though to know when people are not looking at VAT being included... ...well, whether anyone sees it as 'showing off' or not is immaterial, but you need to be able to compare like for like pricing. Anyway, at £100, you're then comparing it to something like a 2TB F4 @ ~£51.67 (in that i bought 4 for ~£62 each inc shipping last week from Aria, & the Samsumgs have a good rep). Well, 'if' you wanted an OS drive you'd have gone for a 1TB F3 or a SSD... ...so i'm assuming you're looking at archive storage which kind of means that unless there were some limitation on the number of drives you could install then the 2TB F4 would have given approximately a third extra space for the money. Then, as it's an archive drive, i'm assuming you'd need to back the data up (losing that much data would be horrendous), so that potentially doubles the cost to £200. On the plus side, these Hitachi drives are somewhat faster though that's not exactly critical for archiving data - well, once you've copied the majority of things on there first off then it effectively just sits there. Anyway, unless there were some practical reason for only being able to install 2 archive drives (or 'if' it had been £100 vs £62 where, whilst still more expensive, the price would have started to approach something reasonable) then personally would have stuck with 2TB ones. if, however, money isn't a factor then i guess why not...
Nicely put. Based on PocketDemons assumptions, I agree that 2x2tb Samsung drives @ £102 exc vat would be better value for money than a 3tb at £100.
I am planning to drop it in my Pc for now then when I purchase a new SSD (when they come out) I can remove it and put it in my synology nas box. It's currently has 5x 2TB in it but with hdd prices constantly falling. I thought it was the best option. I was really after brand reccomendation as I have never used a hitachi drive in anything before.
Has no pointed out that SATA 3 is pointless for mechanical drives? So your paying extra for speed that the drive can never achieve.
No, it won't. To give a comparison, imagine a normal car driving on a road with no speed limits. Will that make the car faster?
