Hitachi raises the stakes in the All-Japan robot wars with it's latest droid, Emiew:

Japanese electronics firm Hitachi has unveiled its first humanoid robot, called Emiew, to challenge Honda's Asimo and Sony's Qrio robots. Hitachi said the 1.3m (4.2ft) Emiew was the world's quickest-moving robot yet at 6km/h (3.7 miles per hour).

Two wheel-based Emiews, Pal and Chum, introduced themselves to reporters at a press conference in Japan.

They will be guests at this month's World Expo. Sony and Honda have both built robots to showcase engineering.

    More here

Bit of a cheat though, as the previous fastest robot was bipedal, not wheeled.

Cheat indeed, and I'd like to see this one climb stairs ;)

It all depends on which environment its placed in though, a factory floor would be ideal for example.

Somewhere at home I've got a book with a title something like "The Usborne Book of the Future". It's actually three earlier books repackaged in a one-volume format.

Now, it's fairly hit-and-miss, but amongst the predictably laughable stuff, there are a goodly number (about 40% I'd say) of eerily accurate predictions for the development timelines and social impacts of what were, at the time (mid 70's), extremely "futuristic" technologies. If you look past the ridiculous one-piece nearly-identical coveralls that all futuristic people are apparently required to wear by law, you have mobile 'phones ("wristos" ha ha but the concept is identical), hybrid cars, fuel cells, spray-on skin, widespread recycling, personal computing, Internet, telecommuting, and a whole bunch more.

Anyway my point is that this 2.5 million number for personal robots sounds more like one of the "wacky, wildly over-ambitious" predictions rather than one of the "eerily accurate" ones :p

    Nezuji :)

Definately moddable. I want a bi-pedal one, I'll swap out his leg servos for quicker ones, replace most of the heavy metal components with fiber composites to reduce weight, and give him red-LED eyes with a grim looking face mask, muhahahaha. Robot modding... the next logical step.

i'd of thought if u called then new rampant rabbits a robot (they do have feedback systems to adjust their functionality..... aparently) then surely theres more than 175,000 ?

Honda's robot 'ASIMO' can climb stairs, up & down ;)

I saw it at the London Science Museum as part of it's 'World Tour'

It was amazing to see how well it can move, very fluid and life-like.

Don't they all at the time? :D
I mean really, imagine it's 1972 - the idea sitting at home for your 'office' job and having it be (access and functionality wise...) just like you were in the office?
Sounds "wacky [and] wildly over ambitious" to me - for 1972 thinking anyway.

True, true, but then again this same book also had us all observing a minute's silence for the anniversary of the end of WWIII during a live 3D holographic broadcast of the first Olympics held on the moon as we sit inside a generational spaceship made by hollowing out a huge asteroid by now... :D
