Is it just me or have Valve realised how pointless this was and removed it?

not pointless; apprently there was a compaitibilty problem with some people - look at the changelog.

i'm guessing they're just doing it to piss off VU a little bit more.

    i'm glad about it anyway

    That's awsome :D

(It means you don't have to have the CD in the drive when you're playing it :) )

I had a steam copy so I don't care, but woot anyways. They probably realized about a third of the posts on the steam forums were related to that and figured they'd pay more in bandwidth than how much they'd lose for the pirated copies and whatnot.

Cool. No need to attempt the use of a no-cd crack, and the chance that Steam bans you - not that I've ever tried... I bought mine via Steam. Good news for all DVD users though!

Na, some RPC1 drive firmwares fool safedisk cause they are effectively "unlocked" and safedisk is so retarded that it thinks its somehow hacking the disk so it refuses to play it. It only happens on some firmwares on some drives. Happened with my UT200x disks too.

Yeah but what if you want to install another game or peice of software? what if you want to rip a cd then misplace your game disc? with safedisc your f***ed, without it meh not a problem just play whenever :D Then you also have the added bonus that when yu've finished installation you can put it back in the box for safe keeping (no chance of the disc being damaged etc...).

Think that about covers the reasons :worried: .

it's well annoying when you want to have a quick game of DM, just for 5mins, and you have to spend 3mins looking for the bloody CD...

hmm, the only game ive got which didn't run from the cd from the start was angel of darkness, but i didn't pay for that and i don't really like it anyway...

i thought most ppl had 2 drives these days? ive got a dvd drive for games (because i would never want to watch a dvd on my computer) and cd writer for everything else.

    Its Gone!!!!

Im glad they finaly took off the CD check. U can now play HL, CS.S without the CD.

The dvd made a hell of a racket when ever i booted with it in the drive. Ive got that vampire game, which uses the source engine. It doesnt take half as long to boot or ahve those anoying loading thigs mid game.

Hopefully next they will totally remove steam. I had no internet last night due to an outage, and I couldn’t play HL2. Good thing I had my *good* copy installed to :)
