Hl2 seems to random stutter and lag... fps drop a little it just lags, like the machine is paging... (but no hdd activity)
Increasing the res seems to make it worse, so having to stikc with 1024 atm. Changed drivers to the 4.12 betas which helped a little, and boosted the average fps... Still dips to ~ 20 randomly from ~60-120....
Anyone getting simialr? Supposdly its an issue with half life itself....

I'm getting lags when a new enemy is coming up. Like just before I turn a corner. In my case I'm sure its my system, as my 1.6 gig and 9800 pro just aren't enough anymore.

As far as i can tell, its the auto savedgames, when you enter a new area of get past a certain hard part it does an auto save which seems to lag out the game for a few seconds, everyone who i've spoken to has had it but its nothing major

its caching thats making it lag.. basically my fps may remain high.. but for instance, the first time fireing a gun.. the sound stutters, as if its being cached/extracted/uncompressed.. remeber, all the files hl2 is working with is in that big gfc file, so each time a new texture/sound is needed, it has to be extracted..

more ram would lessen the problem (since more can be initially cached) but its a problem on valves side

Most likely autosaving, I've noticed it a bit too.

Anyone else notice the load times are *really* long? Or is it just me?

Ok kewl, was told it was on valves side :) The lag is just as described as well, 1280 was unplayable last night (laggy) so will drop down and try again. Will try adding some more ram too...
Strange thing is, my housemates ti4200/2.6 p4c/512mb is running it nice and "smooth"!

I found entering one section of the game completely locked me up for a bit... and both the video and audio went crazy. After about a minute it gave me control again. Dunno if that's anything to do with autosaving or not.

Just before I stopped playing last night the sound started going choppy too. Definitely not related to autosaving.

Yeah that's it, in the Steam release the .gcf isn't uncompressed, whereas it is in the retail install - so retail users shouldn't see this problem. Just ripping the .gcf files doesn't work either, apparently - I wonder what the solution is.

Interesting. Surely Valve must've known this might be a problem on less than bleeding edge PCs?

So far I've only noticed one area where it went wild, but I'm not that far though the game yet!

I've no idea if your issue is the same problem, but the game lagging briefly every time it caches a new sound/effect/animation almost certainly is down to the compressed .gcf.

I'm just hoping it was a one-off. If it keeps happening I won't be a happy ducky.

Well it all seems ok now... dropped the textures down a notch and its miles better. Still get lag someitmes on auto save, and some caching of sounds etc... but other than that nice and smooth :D

And man, does the ant grav gun ROCK!

Not Autosave its a problem with the game itsself and is happening on hundreads of users systems, Top end and middle ground.

Read the Steam HL2 forum. Post "Audio Stuttering"

Valve know about it and are working on a fix.
