Very new to modding so really dipping my toe here. I want to add a hole for a Mnpctech Pro-Line Vandal Resistant Power Switch or a Standard SPST On/Off Toggle Switch, bought from coolermiester and am wondering what is the best tool for cutting a 12-13mm hole in metal. At the moment I am putting together a test bench and want to add a power switch.

I know you can get a tool with various cutters for wood but is there something similar for metal?

Sorry folks the vandal switch is more 18mm and the off/on is around 12mm.

There is a similar thing form metal but for only a 12-13mm hole you should be able to find a large drill bit I would think. Either that or drill a smaller hole and widen it with a dremel. Do you have a drill press or good electric hand drill to use?

    Large drill bit
    Small hole saw
    Dremel

If you dont have the right bit, just drill a load of smaller holes around the outside to punch out the bit you don't want, and then file the hole down until the switch fits :thumb:

My advice.....don't bother with a standard still bit. It could end up messy.

Get a step drill bit, which is a cone shape. Means you can drill perfect round holes. I used one on my sign rig mid plate and was very pleased.

Thats very useful tool but depends on how thick is the surface that he is going to drill.
For example if he is planning to make a hole in 10mm acrylic it won’t work because the steps of this step drill are too small and the drilling may end in ruined detail.

    This one is better :)

Done it this morning, worked perfectly,as it happened the maximum size of the cone drill was just what I needed.

No stopping you now big Elf now you know what is for.LOL.

But seriously I found that its safer if youmake sure that you have a block of wood under where you are drilling. Gives the metal support and lessens the chance of a bend or bow in the metal.

I've found that the only modding I'm good at is sleeving. I can't cut a straight line to save my life.

My straight line cutting is pretty naff also, but I'm sure with practice it would improve, unfortunately do not have the space for large projects or even small for that matter.

Hi KRONOS, We use 3/4" Hole saw attachment for the Mnpctech Vandal PC power switches

If drilling into small piece, like this 5.25 bay cover, Best use 3/4" hole saw in conjunction with Drill press, with small piece clamped down. Otherwise a Power Drill will suffice.

Lack of space prohibits a drill bench but thank you for the comprehensive images. I think I will need to invest in a selection of hole saws.
