Ok judging by the disaster mods thread it is going to be a bi*ch to do this but... I have three procs a 486dx, p100 and a cyrix 133 and i want to make keychains out of them, but i am curious is there any way to drill a hole through the ceramic for the loop, but still leave the chip functional, sort of a trace dead spot? I doubt it but i thought it would be cool to have a working proc beside my working ram on my keys.
I doubt you'll find a place to drill and it still work, most people cut the pins off for a key-chain. If you dont, they wont last long anyway and you wont be wanting to put you keys in your pocket, thats for sure. If you have the chips made of drill-bit-kryptonite you might consider soldering a loop onto one of the corners, I've seen quite a few like that and they look pretty nice.
when i saw this thread all i thought was: "Holey Processors, Batman!" hehe    Just me being stoopid again!
the only thing i know of that has managed to cut through a cpu is an Ultrasonic Drill, i think the Cheese Man got it done with on at uni, not sure tho
Have you got any pics of the soldered one? Given me some ideas... Yeah i can remember someone did get it drilled with some fancy expensive drill.
yeah it was an ultra sonic drill, it involved water ad things and a resovior being built around the lil bt u wanted to drill, maybe you could do it with a diamond tipped drill and a lot of oil if you drill slowly, not sure th ough
I tried drilling thru a burnt out Slot A 1ghz athlon with the following tools (in the order I tried them): Dremel 18v Cordless Drill 600w Bosch Drill 1200w Makita Percussion Hammer drill (hammer turned off ) Big-ass bench drill sledgehammer (pending!) I tried HSS drill bits, masonry bits, tungsten carbide bits, using WD40, oil, even butter! Nothing worked! - I now have a slighly dented and very scratched - yet holeless athlon back in my drawer - having given up on the whole affair.... until guy fawkes night that is *evil grin*
maybe i should get this moved, there goes 1 titanium coated 3/32" drill bit, hmm what next, i think im gonna slice off the pins and bond a little loop to the surface and then put my chain through that. I I only had access to a high pressure water jst that should make a clean cut, il see what my local glass and ceramics shop would charge and if they can cut a hole in it for me.
has anyone tried a drill bit for ceramic? they make em for glass too.. heres a hint, take a nail and put a small chip where you want the hole to keep the bit from walking.. -scoob8000
i wonder if a laser engraver will work. my grandma has one, ill take mine over there to next time i go and see if it works.
heh why not use a thermic lance? my dad used to use one of those at some aluminium extruding factory for cutting poles the size of lamp posts in half bet that would put a scratch or 2 in your chip
