thanks guys, busy working on the cube atm, will post results later :)

but for those bugging me for one, a WALLPAPER

    *** edit ***

cube done, had some issues with the vanishing points as the extrame angle meant i had to tape a piece of paper on the side to get it. i used my lightbox to get the perspective right with the char so she should stand on it comfortable without it looking like a blatent copy pasta job.

    a quick mockup

im still not 100% happy with it, something is bugging me but atm im too tired to figure out what, i'll hack it up in the morning :dremel:

    GOT IT:thumb:

this might not make sense (i never did go to any art classes) so roll with me on this.

The problem was with the image composision as a whole, the horizon line was too high shifting the initial focus from the whole image to the chars breats/face and whilst Sir Digby wont complain i wasnt happy with leaving a huge hole in the image above her.

"but why not just move the image as a whole upwards?" Balance my dear Watson, moving the image up would throw the entire frame (picture) out of focus, if it was just the char on her own this wouldnt be a problem but when using geometry it can drastically break the image.

the off angle also gives a sense of smallness to the character which is something I didnt want as this is a very important character in the whole project.

with the horizon shifted the cube now comes more into focus resulting in a near completly different albeit more balanced image, just goes to show that there are times when you should trust your instincts as opposed to your instruments.

I have to say that this is amazing work. I agree on your change of horizon level. When looking at the last picture of your post where you said you weren't happy with it it did seem to me that the cube was a bit stretched to fit the girl correctly.

I definitely will be following this till the end.

One thing I'm curious on is what do you use to get your drawing off the paper and into the computer? Is it scanned or done on a tablet?

AARGH! this is starting to annoy me, i cant seem to get the geometry in a manner i want, might just say balls to it and do it by eye like im used to. :wallbash:

im going to bed, i'll rage over this in the morning.

meh, couldnt sleep. cracked what was pissing me off tho, Cube 1 was supposed to be the better choice but i made the depth of it a little too long without realising it, i can easily rectify in PS :thumb:

first thing is first, a can of pepsi max and a Mr. Kipling lemon slice and we're good to go

after applying the basic colour to the cube im going to build a perspective plane over it to aid me in my work, firing up the vanishing point filter we can thne build a grid over the image (i left the pencil lines clearly in view to help line up these grids, PS will calculate the perspective for the grid and colour it either blue (good), yellow (weaksauce) or red (gtfo!)

look at that, damn its good  i can then use the grids to apply various decals and textures to the cube, its a shame that your interaction with the grid is somewhat limited, it be awesome to paint on it as if it were a 3d model but no matter, the grid will suffice.

this is a temp texture for the time being, i want to show the cube as having a few years usage behind it, i will most likly set it to near 0% opacity on a dodge layer and then bring out whatever marks i want and where i want them.

later on tonight i'll sort the grooves between the panels and add some depth to it.

lots of work done, the cube is nearing completion even tho there is no real lighting or shadow layer yet, a lot of the work is in the little details. its still very flat so bare with me.

I've emphasised lighting on the grooves between the plates and changed the design a little and decided to add a childs scrawling on the side as well as add double edging. yeah i know some of the grooves sont quite match up but they can easily be hidden.

the next thing to do is to make the emitters in the cube, i didnt want a single bright bar as it would look overly simplistic so i went hunting and stole a hexagonal design from a vase i spotted. a quick bit of shopping and we have a texture (complete with small cameral lenses) i know the aspect of the lens will be off but its a minor detail and one that wont be very visable, if it is i can deal with it then.

then we COPY PASTA, COPY PASTA, COPY PASTA, COPY PASTA, COPY PASTA, COPY PASTA, COPY PASTA, COPY PASTA,

are your eyes screaming yet? i know mine are :waah:

OKAY! holographic lenses are complete, I inverted the layer which makes them appear as tho they are on, it also hides the little aspect issue with the lenses i was talking about earlier, using the grid i copy pasta'd the textures on each side of the cube before spending about 20 mins aligning them. i also made a small extrusion to aid in hiding the lenses that were cut in half which is cool as it gives it a little more depth in that area.

With that out of way its time to make the cube look worn, In Wing: Wir Sind Nur Menschlich the cube has had 20 years of being active including being abused by a small child as well as fed fed to the dog.

there's two ways of doing this:

    1. paint the markings on top of hte cube via another layer

    2. copy pasta the cube ontop of itself via another layer and chip away at it with the eraser tool using a selection of different brushes.

i'll be using method 2 as i can get brutal the hue/opacity/colour intesity without damaging the outlines of my weathering. CS3's brush tools are ****ING AWESOME! not only can you put a brush inside a brush (yo dawg!) but you can change the shape and size of of the active brush in real time.

what ive done here is ive put a fat round blotchy brush inside a vertical stroke brush, then using the brush tip shape options of the brush pallete ive tightened the width and length of the brush whilst similtaniously changing its orientation, the result is a very cool "Scratching" brush which i can use to chip away at the top layer exposing the layer underneath.

tomorow i'll work on making the interfaces for each side of the cube as well as try to polish off the lighting on the cube. :thumb:

    CUBE DONE!

lighting wont come until the holographic readouts are complete and i have an idea on how to go about it

decided to add a homage to possibly the greatest graphic card manufacture ever, 2 points if you can name the card.

right onto the readouts themselves, im going to experiment with the one side which shows the date and time, i'll work on the other sides when im happy with how im going to do these.

the original ideas on the design sheet went out hte window quickly as they were far too flat, so under the knife they went

    angles rock

remember when i built the perspective grid earlier on when building the cube? PS keeps the data in the filter memory so i was able to grab the grids and drag them away from the surface of the cube to aid me in applying the readouts

after fiddling about for a while i was still miffed at it still looking too flat, it wasnt until i went and saw district 9 yesterday that i had an idea, we copy pasta it on top of itself and remove several layers.

 thats cool, time to work on the other side.

file is 214mb and im still not done :worried:
