Unfortunately I'm lost and can't get it to work. I've gone into set interface IP addresses, can you tell me what the following should be or an example please:
    Wan -
    Ipv4 address I have 192.168.1.85
    Ipv4 subnet bitcount 24
Wan ipv4 gateway address is this the router's IP?
Does ipv6 matter? Can that use dhcp?

    Lan-
    Ipv4 address I changed to 192.168.2.1
    Subnet bit count 24
Ipv4 gateway address what is this?
    Same with ipv6.

    Thanks

I would recommend going to a completely different network range for your LAN, like 10.1.1.1 & 10.1.1.x DHCP range.

    What router are you using?
Are you going to use the firewall to NAT or leave that to your router?
    Have you got static IP's?

For the WAN side the gateway is your routers IP, for the LAN side you can set it to itself
If you're not using IPv6 then leave it on auto

    bt home hub 3.
I'll leave that to the router, I've disabled the firewall NAT in pfsense
    no static ip from isp.

Ok I'm going to try with these settings then:
    Wan -
    Ipv4 address 192.168.1.85
    Wan ipv4 gateway address= router's ip (192.168.1.254)

    Lan-
    Ipv4 address 10.1.1.1
    Subnet bit count 24
    Ipv4 gateway address 10.1.1.1
LAN DHCP server on range 10.1.1.1-10.1.1.127

    does that look right?

Once changed how will I know the ip address to access ESXi from the LAN? At the moment it's 192.168.1.86

You'll need to assign ESXi an IP on the LAN or enable routing to get from the LAN to the WAN.

You'll also need to tell the homehub that the 10.1.1.x network is through pfsense (192.168.1.85)

It's on the ESXi box you can change the management IP's (actual yellow & black console screen)

The homehub bit is in the advanced router settings

I set esxi to 10.1.1.86 and I can now access it from the lan. On the home hub advanced settings I can the the only physical connected device is pfsense at 192.168.1.85, the only options that is there is port forwarding. It seems there's nothing linking the pfsense wan and lan together.

Is there not a static route section in the homehub? I know the businesshub has one

No doesn't look like it. Is there another option or is it time for a new router?

If you want to use pfsense to protect you're entire LAN then you'll need a new router.
If you just want it to protect your VM's then we can work around it

Ok I'll just have it protect the VMs for now thanks. I'll attempt this again when I have a new router.
I managed to get NAS4Free set up ok and sharing a drive across the network that my ubuntu server vm can access, only problem is it won't transfer any faster than 1.6MB/s if I do the copy from there (on ubuntu vm from Synology NAS to vm NAS4Free) it transfers the same file at over 30MB/s if I start the transfer from my windows pc, what am I missing?

Check your nic speeds. I'm sure one of your nics was at 100mb

It can't be that, I meant it's over 30MB/s from and to the same place when using the windows PC to do the transfer (from one share to the other). The 100mb was the WAN NIC to the router which isn't being used at the moment.

Are both VM's on the same disk?

What's the physical drive setup on the esxi box?

Yeah all the VMs and the virtual hard drives are on the same 3TB disk.

I don't know why that happens with the ubuntu server vm but I also couldn't connect to a vpn with it, I think it is because it can't detect a wired network in the network manager although internet and network functionality work.
It doesn't matter too much now as I set up another vm with a different OS and that's working fine.

Help! I changed the CPU cooler today and when I plugged everything back in and reconnected I was met with this unwelcome screen:

There is only one Hard drive in the server and ESXI is installed on it along with the virtual disks. It's booting from the Hard drive so why can't it find the discs with the vms on?
