i just built something like that myself (although a little different to the method you showed us) and it works perfectly, so thanks!! =) i will also put up some pics soon!

well, now what you will be more interested in (at least i think so):
i am a programmer and just had a look at the rawmouse class and it seems to be pretty straight forward. using this would allow us to assign the second scroll wheel (knob) to whatever we want it to. so you can adjust the volume, scroll horizontally or whatever... i will have a closer look at the class and try to make it work with the knob tomorrow.

so if you're interested just give me some time!

Welcome to the forums skafelix

I, for one, am quite curious as to what you will come up with. Maybe start a new thread with your software (if you'd share) & put a link here. :thumb:

Wow, three years later and this just made Makezine.

    On Makezine

So after seeing that on make, I feel the need to build a new one. I'll post back in a few days if I can get anything decent whipped up.

And jeez, look how out of date my sig is! I haven't been around here in a while, that computer was replaced with a Q6600 box a while ago.

i remember seeing this thread years ago, but never saw a need for one until now.

i would really like a '3Dconnexion SpaceNavigator Personal Edition USB' and was wondering if you could help me develop something similar.

if you go to there site you can see the functions push it down and pull it up allows for a zoom in and out function, rotation can be delt with spinning the VCR head. and i would think about the 'panning' function at a later date as i dont tend to pan much. i use solidworks like most people use google, but cant afford to get a USB knob atm as being a student money is better spent on food and other things.

tell me could i use a custom made knob that has a stationary base instead of the VCR head? i do have access to a pretty massive machine shop with plenty of stock material waiting to be used..

please help! especially with the the linear motion of the 'zooming in out funtion' maybe use two rotatary encoders one mounted to run parrallel to the shaft with a sprung mount so it always centre's after use.. would need two mice for that..

oh and it would be wireless to complicate matters!

    *edit*

the second rotatary encoder wouldn't be suitable for the zooming function, a three position switch mounted at the bottom would be ideal push down and hold or pull up and hold depending on the required direction of zoom.
