http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6947118853654187245&q=honda+asimo+fall rofl, those robots still crack me up you can almost see the virtual look on the robots face when it realizes it just miscalculated
Hmm, it doesn't look it miscalcuated. It appears to be some sort of mechanical problem I think. It takes a step, then you see its knee joint kind of collapsing, and the angle closed rapidly. Once that happens, its posture is completely unstable and it was definitely top-heavy and thus needs an exact balance. And then BOOM. And that is why there will never be I Robot or Terminator type robot rebellions - robots don't know that they're not supposed to slam and scratch their face up when they fall. =)
His right leg just gives in and just colapses so it just slammed into the groung. ITs not the first time its fallen over. as hes done it many a times. Still think the Asimo robot is a very cool and impresive invention. Id love to own one of them.
Meh, I'll be impressed once they create a robot that can jump also. Which is pretty much impossible. Ontopic, the video is pretty funny. I like how they cover it up with a wall.
I'd be rather impressed if they really did have something more of a true AI, at least to learn that when they fall... to try and defend themselves. Not, as that asimo did of just do that kinda simpsons moleman thing of "oh dear, i appear to be falling over... down... i.... go...."
Sony's Q-Rio robot jumps. Admittedly, only a few mm. I can't seem to find the exact video that shows it, but here's a few to gawp at in wonderment. Link Link
That's a great site - I had no idea there were so many decent robots knocking about. That Sony robot's pretty good, but not the best. I love the "Rollerwalker" too (it's in "Gallopers", near the bottom); can you say Tachikowa?
Asimo is cool. Has anyone seen that new Honda advert with him wondering through a museum - good stuff! Love the video, I was rather expecting him to put his hands down when he fell! Must stop anthromorphizing machines
Saving reflexes. That will be the next generation. I love the way they quickly put a screen around it. Can't have people get upset at the harrowing sight of an injured robot...
It made such a horrible empty plastic noise when it hit the deck... Those things creep me out so much. Their legs are sooo weird, and when they run they are just sinister (although not quite as scary as Pinoir & posy). I hide from the TV when the Honda ad is on. (That ad doesn't freak me out as much as Debenham's skating santa ones though. His face isn't on straight. It's all wrong! Wrong!)
the museum ad is cool as all hell. when asimo falls, he has a failsafe to just hold still, asimo is capable of keeping balance, so he can move his mass to keep upright, but he also has safe limits set to ensure that if he is going to fall over, he just stands still and falls, so he doesn't flail his arms around and decapitate any small children. climbing stairs is actually a very complex thing for asimo to do, when he has to climb stairs his processors are running flat out on keeping him upright, staying upright on a complex surface is much harder than you think. (in case you are wondering, Honda have a massive educational pack available from Honda research, so schools and such can use it in lessons, asimo is quite old now and featured heavily in their educational packs [cause everyone wants to build one and put a gun on it ]. there are several asimo robots, used all over the world, i had the immense pleasure of watching on on a trip to London.) <offtopic> i cant remember which, but one of the humanoid robots remembers who you are, and more importantly, remembers what you do with it. if you don't like it, it wont like you. it plays with balls and toys and if it tries to play with you and you ignore it, it will ignore you when you try to give it commands. hands up who wants to give it a gun and tell it its mother was a snowblower </offtopic>
