So the Ka is smaller than a fiesta!? I didn't think that was physically possable! ;)

The Mondeo is a family car? Doesn't look big enough from the pic I see - not much bigger than an Escort wagon.

    edit::
Dang man, cars are cheap over there! £1000 is about $1600 right?

LOL @ the garage's comment, so utterly true.

Dad, £1k is about $1600 ,yes.

The Ka is very small, but not much different to a fair few cars (Fiat Seicento - my car, or the VW Lupo, Seat Arosa, Toyota Yaris, and a whole load of japanese superminis) :hehe:

Certain cars over here are very cheap (small cars tend to depreciate fairly slowly, but cars like the Ford Mondeo drop like a stone pricewise because they're so common), but given the amount we pay for petrol the cost of motoring I imagine is still cheaper stateside. It must be, heck my uncle living in TN couldn't afford the petrol to run a his Dorango or Ford Taurus over here in the UK :p

    yea thats about rihgt

actually there is a fiar amoutn of space in a KA as long as you dont have long legs

ok the current ford range, fromt he liilist

the ka - a fiesta with no boot & a smaller space inthe back, pretty fun to drive but uncomfortable, they also spawned the sportKA ( a tunred version) & the streetKA (a convertable)

then you have the fiesta, too many iddferent models

then the focus - this is the replaicemtn to the escort, its a relatively large car, it also has the RS focus

then the modeo - this si the large family estate, repmobile hatchback, good motorway vehicles, seem em doign a ton donw motorway without stuggling

then the galaxy - people carrier gets the job done

then the explorer - a 4x4, i think they call em suv's over there but it bombed badly

then the transit - a ****ing big van

Yea, it's an SUV over here (Sport Utility Vehicle). I imagine because cars over there are so tiny compared to what I'm used to, I'm not suprised that the Explorer bombed.

Small cars are great, I love small cars..

    a) You can park
    b) you get good MPG
    c) you can get through gaps
    d) they're lighter, good acceleration with bigger engines.

SMART cars, for example, whilst I don't like them.. I'd much rather have one of those for commuting in over a Mondeo or something, because I see so many spaces that you could park it in.

They're ideally suited to UK city living, which I think is what US people have trouble understanding. It seems US people (not saying you Dad, but just a generalisation) think they're poking fun at our small cars when in reality if you took a big US car over here it'd be next to useless in many towns.

Plus when you say 'too small for a family car' you have to also appreciate that we don't pack enough stuff in the car to feed and live comfortably for a week when going out for day with kids :)

Hahaha... Nah, I'm not trying don't poke fun at small cars, they have their place, but it's difficult for me to think about owning a small car because of my circumstances. The car that I have now is pretty small compared to other cars I've owned and I have real trouble when I go to do the shopping or whatever I need to do. Quite often if the kids are with me, I've got bags of stuff in the trunk (boot I think you call it), plus bags of stuff in the back seat. Sometimes I have to think about what I'm buying so that I can make sure it fits in my car which makes me want a larger vehicle - or maybe a truck.

After visiting the UK, and Italy, and France a few years ago, I was amazed at the cars over there. I saw a mini-van that was shorter than my shoulder in height (and I'm not that tall) and a TON of little cars, including Ka's (imagine only 1/2 inch of bumper in front of and behind the wheels on a shrunken festiva) and fiat's and the like. The only SUV style vehicles I saw there were Deisel Cherokee's.

In the UK you say I would have trouble parking my Durango, but I beg to differ, I could park ON TOP OF most of the cars there. I'm sure I couldn't afford to drive 20 miles in the UK though.

Another thing about the cities in the UK, They are not generally grid based, with square blocks and perpendicular roads. When you fly over london and the countryside at night, the roads look like Paisleys, all twisty and turney, because the cities were there long before they thought of mass transit, or even cars. they were mostly just paths that turned into roads after years and years. American cities look like a checkerboard, all squares and blocks, even in the smaller towns. All those turns and hills and such make it hard to get a big vehicle through the streets.

I would like small cars too, if I lived in the UK, but I'll take my big hunk of American Metal, it can tow 10,000 LBs and haul 8 people, all with the same poor gas milage I get when it's empty. It goes fast and smooth, and in the ICY winters, it's got the traction to get me to work and back, even in the worst blizzard. Most UK cars wouldn't be able to make it into my DRIVEWAY in the winter, let alone get down the street. We get ALOT of snow. Even the Subaru's and Audi Quattro's get stuck where I live on a regular basis. I tow them out of the ditches all the time.

I'd love to drive a big American car, but there's no way in hell I'd be able to afford it... :(

It's expensive enough to drive a car that does around 40mpg, so if I was looking at 15mpg or less, not to mention insurance...

Exactly, I think if the UK was a 'big car city' for some reason, people would be whacking into each other a lot more than they do now.

I've driven down plenty of streets where I've been wingmirror to wingmirror and I drive a Fiat Punto! I drive short and snappy, like a fly.. which is why a small car is superb for flipping out down dual carriageways and A roads. :)

Granted, they not suited for long distance driving, but when does anyone have to drive long distance in the UK? ;)

    re parking:
if you bought an american car to a car park (parking lot) you'd have to use two spaces, and then only be able to open the doors on one side.

    re the cars themselves:
american cars don't have suspension, just gooey rubber damping, and they have nasty power-steering which give you no feedback.

    /rant

however, big american cars (eg the huge pickups) do generally look much better than the others, but then, if you want a great looking regular car you should get an Audi. I would like to take inspiration from audi if i ever properly mod a pc...

Back in High School we had some exchange students over from Berwick, PA and one in particular kept boasting about how his dads car would beat anything here in a straight line race...

...We took him for a little B-Road jaunt in an Audio Sport Quattro (SWB :D)...

"How can you go so fast around corners?"

though technically rover is not longer British made

But I agree, there are lots of more modern cars that I would trade, but I just have this thing about old classics, who cares that you can't steer....or park.....or get good MPG....I just like cause they are classic
