does anyone here know of any good image hosting websites that don't require the forfeit of rights to uploaded content to the website holder (aka: picasa web albums via google) I have been thinking about just running a gallery on a VPS but would prefer a more elegant solution than that.

Flickr doesn't require you to forfeit rights, and they have a fairly open architecture that allows you to link to their system. See my link below to see what I mean.

There is also Zenfolio, and another one that my mind just blanked on (I will edit this as soon as I remember it). Both are galleries that allow linking to websites and point of sales. Basically, they function as a hosing and back end to your website.

Edit: the 3 are, Smugmug, Pbase, and Zenfolio.

Couldn't you get a cheap hosting package, and install a gallery on the shared server? I've installed Wordpress, and then the PhotoQ addon, which gives me the ability to batch upload pics to the shared server, from the Wordpress backend, with the usual functions (edit info etc). You can skin the Wordpress templates easily enough too, with a little CSS knowledge. There are some pre-configured templates which will work very well wwith PhotoQ, to give a pretty decent photo gallery.

Not sure if this is the type of thing you are after, but I chose this way over Flickr etc, as I have full control over images etc. and I could tailor the site to suit. Here's the site I created:

that is another thing i am playing with as i can get a VPS which is hosted very close to my location with a good link (10mbps Synchronus) with 40GB and 400GB of bandwidth for around $34 CDN and then everything stays within canada. (my preference)

i will check this out as it might fit my bill
