I noticed that my Fonera was getting very warm to the touch and I have seen the videos of other peoples melting. So to cool mine down I busted out the dermal and sawed a sun roof in the top and the pictures say the rest.

Oh I forgot to say I added a huge heat sink.

    Sorry for no progress pictures.

Very nice, indeed! How is the heatsink held on, thermal epoxy, superglue?

I've got a Fonera that I keep meaning to get round to modding, but never quite do. Great to see others are though!

It is held on by a sticky thermal pad and the hole in the case is a very tight squeeze so it is nice and snug.

    Hi,
Can someone explain me how this fonera stuff works? If i remember right it is some kind of free hotspots? The reason i am asking is that we own a bar and am thinking of putting this in as a service. But only if i can turn the bandwidth down a bit... (Charging people for internet usage is NOT getting you rich, and there aren't that many people with laptops around here...

Very clean cuts there to that case. Its nice to see someone taking charge and doing something about a problem with a proper solution. I bet its not near as warm now huh. :naughty:

Otherwise I have been trying to get my hands on one of those fonera's with no luck thus far :sigh:

I got my free fonera yesterday, I was thinking of seeing if I could power it by solar panels but i'm a bit skint at the mo.

Yep, you can set the bandwidth throttling. By default, normal users (those without a Fonera hotspot at home sharing their own connection) pay something like $3/day to connect. But if they share their own connection, they get in free. Unless they're in "Bill" mode, in which case they get a cut of the paid users fees. Well, it's not quite that simple I guess. Two modes: Linus and Bill.

Guest-to-Linus: Guest pays, Linus gets nothing
Guest-to-Bill: Guest pays, Bill gets a small cut
    Linus-to-Linus: Free all around
Linus-to-Bill: Linus pays, Bill gets a small cut
Bill-to-Linus: Bill pays, Linus gets nothing
Bill-to-Bill: first one pays, second one gets a small cut of it.

Better version maybe: Linuss share for free, and get in to other Linus APs for free. Bills share for profit, but have to pay the fee at other hotspots. If you want to share a connection at a bar or something, you might as well go for Bill mode.

Anyways... good idea with the mod. Mine gets extremely hot as well, although it hasn't (yet) got to the point where I'm concerned about it melting :worried:

Ok. Signed up today, i have some more things to deal with before we're really up and running with the bar. But soon everything is set, the fonera thingy will be up and running.
