    Hello all,

I have recently bought Fractal Design Define R2 case. It has 8 hard drive trays. I would like to make a back plate for the trays. The plate will have the same function of a hot swapable.
I am not sure where to start as it is my first attempt at modding.

    Thanks all,

    Shah

You could just make a plate and fix power/sata cables to it. I've done something similar in the past and it worked pretty well.

    Thanks for the reply,

Well that seems so simple but would not be easy for me. Do you hav any idea where i can get the cables, connectors and also the plate itself as i do not have cutting tools etc. Maybe could just get a hotswappable panel and fix it to the case.

If you want to make the backplane from scratch, you can get connectors at Mouser.com and there are tons of companies that can make you a PCB to your specs.

Was it coolermaster who made some clamp-on sata-backplane-kinda accessory to one of their cases? My google skills fail.

Thanks man, and you're welcome! I've got a few myself that I'll be using on OSIDIAS, and they are quality parts. Good luck!

Do you intend to really do hot swapping (changing drives while the computer is on and running)?
If some, make certain that the controller can do it, is in a mode that allows for it, and make sure that is all you need.

I'm not sure if this is still true, but it used to be that you needed to run the built in SATA controller(s) on the ICH9 or ICH10 in AHCI mode to support hot swapping.

well hot swapping was the intend. first step is to make the plate for all the hdds which would make it easier to install the hdd in the case. at some point i might have to hot swap so i would like to have the option.

I have no idea if that is still the case but i will do a little research now.
