you can set up a gmail account that also opens and sends her Hotmail

goto settings> accounts > Get mail from other accounts:

    within Gmail

    it is awesome stuff

    yeah kinda a cop-out though.

played with it before for other emails. it works but rather have them seperate if possible rather than litter her inbox with rubbish.

i guess its an option if nothing else works

I take it she normally uses webmail for both, so it's not the case that something like outlook is downloading the mail via POP3 and then deleting it from the server? The fact that the error is no mail rather than server not responding or something like that suggests it's connecting ok :S

sounds like it cause if i set up the mail manually the settings are verified and it sets up but does NOT retrieve any mail. if i make a change to those setttings i get a no response from the server message

ive played with the download mail size limits and freq stuff but it makes no difference.

what pop server settings are you using?

    they should be

    pop.live.com (SPA) port 995

    and

    smtp.live.com (SSL) port 25

It is going to the inbox first (as opposed to drafts or outbox or anything)? And you know for a fact there's unread mail there? Have you tried using IMAP instead of POP for incoming?

(sorry, I hate asking those sort of questions, especially on here, but you never know :( )

Sadly no, stock Mail app only allows one exchange account. Apparently there's a version which does multiple Exchange accounts on the XDA developers forums, and HTC are meant to be updating the Sense mail app sometime soon with it too.
