    Hi,
I am running 2 PC's with windows 98 second edition on them both , and have managed to share files between them with no problems .. can see both PC's in the networking window ...and have enabled internet connection sharing .

    BUT ......

the 2nd PC just Can't seem to get on the internet !

I am with AOL Broadband ... and because its a USB Modem the 2nd PC just can't seem to recognise it , am running ethernet cards and a crossover cable.

it works when I had Win XP on , but I really want win98se because its so fast and takes up less HDD space.

does anyone know how to fix this problem please ?

any info will be greatly appreciated

Well, if you use WinXP as the internet comp, connection sharing will actually make a 3.5" floppy that you can install on the second computer to set it up. It'll even make it for Win98, Win2k, whatever.

When me and my roommates got DSL, they sent us one of those USB modems (is it the one that looks like a Stingray?). We bought a pppoe modem off ebay and use routers now. There are many advantages to using that method, but if you don't want to spend the money and such, connection sharing should be real easy to setup. My first two years in college I shared a 56gay connection using connection sharing on 98se machines, and had no problems.

Your problem might be the AOL (since I have no idea how that works) or you might not have bridged the two connections (the one that AOL setup and the one connected to your other computer). Other than that, you'll have to give more info

    a bit more info ....

    Hi,
thanks for the reply much appreciated. :D

at the moment I am running Win XP on my main computer and Win 98 SE on my 2nd PC, sharing and internet connection is ok but must share everytime i log on (i don't mind doing that) . :naughty:

I really don't want to spend no more money on routers 'n' stuff like that, just that I would rather just try and have 2 PC's running Win98se on both, but in the network neighborhood page there are no modem or internet connections to share in there only ... folders. :duh:

this is what I have :

2 computers with 10GB HDD on both
224MB of ram with AMD Duron processor on both
SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter on both computers with a Crossover cable
file and printer sharing enabled on both PC's
    Client for microsoft networks
    microsoft family logon
    Dial up adapter
Dial up adapter #2 [VPN Support]
    Microsoft PPP over ATM Adapter
    Microsoft Virtual Private Networking Adapter
...and on the 1st computer I have a BT Voyager 100 USB ADSL Modem, and running AOL 8.

....now before I had a USB Broadband connection, ... I had a 56k dial-up modem with AOL ... and was running Win98se on both computers : ... I had no problems sharing files or internet connection on both PC's , but with a USB connection it just doesn't seem to be recognised in the modem settings coz its not a com1 or com2 or pci card, so i think maybe thats why the PC can't share it, :waah: then again maybe i'm wrong.

hope this helps with more info for you :thumb:

well, you're not really sharing the port so much as sharing the connection. Go to "Network Connections" and it should be in there. If not... well, that doesn't make sense then :)

If it's not there, AOL must've done something that I just can't cope with. Just the word AOL sends shivers up my spine. I think you should find an AOL rep and strangle him

Here, I found this pic to demonstrate a good technique

with AOL I think you have to install their software on both the computers and only one can connect at once or perhaps one has to be connected before it'll work.

    I hate AOL!

Try to find a beta version of their dialer as it supports ICS afaik.

I think the real question here is, if you have broadband, why do you have AOL? My dad does that and I don't understand it... his reason is that he's always used aol.. /shrug, hard to teach an old dad new tricks ;)

    :baby: Well .........
to be honest, ...we hate AOL too :eyebrow: ...the reason we have it coz ..it only was enabled in our area in November 2003, and it was a special offer of : £19.99 per month - for the first 12 months, :hip: and you get a free adsl modem too ! :hehe: ..... for everyone else in the UK it is £27.99 for the first 12 months :p almost the same with other servers too... but with some of them you have to pay between £20 and £50 for some modems as well as the monthly subscription :jawdrop: .

so all in all ...not a bad bargain :naughty:

whoa, I just noticed you were in the UK... does anyone else think it's weird that AOL is over there?

Anyhow, my dad pays Comcast for cable modem, then pays AOL additionally for their "service." That's what I don't understand. I guess if you got the whole sha-bang from AOL for cheaper than you would have, I can understand it (well, almost understand it anyway).

Did you ever find anything useful to help out your problem?

I think tiscali broadband is £15.99 with free setup but I'm not 100% sure on that.

PS: try again for the AOL Dialer....

I think this is very useful to me, even tho I still haven't solved the problem yet, ... its so good to ask for help sometimes, instead of doing my head in trying to solve it myself, ...most of the time its a trial an error ...and I do win the computer sometimes, there are 4 of us in our house who uses the PC ..so thats why I have managed to network 2 of them, ...but the kids always seem to nag nag nag to get it better :waah: .

your help as been greatly appreciated, ...I must thank you for your time

    AOL Networking

Look I run AOL broadband with the Voyager 100 USB modem and have tried to network two pc's together using it for sharing. You don't need aol software to connect! Just start up IE then you should get a box with username and password in. Just put in your joe_bloggs@aol.com thingy in and password then connect. you should get the normal connection icon in the bottom right like you were over dial-up but it'll be ADSL speed. It should work
