No problem buddy, glad to help.

I cant get POP or SMTP to work with analogX at the moment, its causing me a bit of a headache. Whatever I try to get them enabled, I end up with the dreaded red icon :grr:
Did you get these protocols to work ok?

Gah, AOL, nastiest ISP in the world, and tiscali is not better tbh.

If you really want cheap broadband then take a look at nildram, 22.99 a month for their cheapest 512k service, dunno if activation is free atm but it's free to migrate from any other ADSL provider to nildram at the moment.

Tis well worth the extra bit of money imo, they're one of the best ADSL providers in the uk, just waiting to my BTO service to get migrated to nildram's 1mbit service.

You don't need a phone number for an adsl connection, just stick any old numbers in the box where it asks for one.

I tried reading through all this, but I might have missed it... although I think it should be called UKOL also!

Have you gone into Add/Remove Windows components and added "Internet Connection Sharing"? This isn't normally installed with Windows 98, but you'll need it to share the connection without spending any cash.

Oh, and that'll let you make one of those floppies too, but you shouldn't need one if you can share files already.

Oh, and then you don't need to set everything up through a proxy - although I sometimes like to use one anyway (can help get around university internet limitations you see!)

    Yesssssssssssss !!!!!!

right 1st of all ... the reason I'm with AOL is coz I am having it for HALF price for the 1st 12 Months coz its only just been enabled in my area in Wales UK ... thats a pretty good bargain even if it is Crap !
....so if i go to hell ....tis only coz I saved myself some money and your n ot ! :naughty:

Well anyway ..... Guess what, ......'as Blue Infinity' said in an earlier post

" Look I run AOL broadband with the Voyager 100 USB modem and have tried to network two pc's together using it for sharing. You don't need aol software to connect! Just start up IE then you should get a box with username and password in. Just put in your joe_bloggs@aol.com thingy in and password then connect. you should get the normal connection icon in the bottom right like you were over dial-up but it'll be ADSL speed. It should work "

I did this and now I'm running AOL without the AOL program installed on my puter ! ...its Fast .... its great ! >>> :D  :hehe:

so wether you like AOL or not tis good .
....this is even better than using a Proxy server ..my 2nd PC gets on the net quicker and recognised it straight away !!! ...thanks guys ! :thumb:

    Close but not right.

The Tiscali service is 150Kbps (effectively 3x). I think NTL offer a similar package if you have cable.

I believe you! But I'd wouldnt mind if they could offer me anything better than a pokey 56k (read 44Kbps) dial-up! Dont think this is going to happen in a hurry though...

i have something which most ppl who hate aol will agree on.

AOL has all the properties of a computer virus EG:

    1. it slows down your computer and eats RAM

    2. it makes backups of itself making it an almost in destructable app.

    3. it installs stuff that is damaging to other programs and apps.

and you still pay for it?

OMG you have the AOL virus format immediatly before it spreads
    oh it already has.

if ics isnt working then it might be easier to get a basic proxy server set up to share the connection. i used to use this when i had aol dial up i think it was called analog x or something, will see if i still have it on my pc when i get home

If you really are gonna stick with aol, ring em up and act like your going to cancel. When we did this, they said they'd give us aol broadband for 15 quid/month

Not that we did, we cancelled and went for zen, excellent isp

When i had aol, i managed to share it with ethernet. I completely uninstalled aol, then just installed the modem. After that i went on the modem properties in network connection, told it to "dial up" my aol screename @aol.com and entered the password. Then i told it to auto connect anytime internet acess was needed and shared it.

To be honest, if you want "real" broadband, get a router and a different isp

alright, i read about signing into aol through IE and everything to aviod the aol program itself, but im wondering if one on dial up aol could do this too, and if so, how? im sick of using aol to access the internet, and until i build a faster computer (which should happen soon, but im going crazy right now) im stuck with dial up. any thoughts?
