I would like to make the point that it's not a £60 laptop. That's just what DeadP1xels was offered in trade-in, I'm assuming from PC World or similar.

They tried to offer me £30 for a laptop I went on to sell for £160. 13", 2GHz Celeron, 2GB RAM, 120GB hard drive, Windows Vista. Not too dissimilar to OP's spec if he got the new drive...

EDIT: This guy wants a laptop! Go ask him!

    Had a mind wave :)

If i use the live cd for ubuntu i can run the os off mem she does'nt need physical storage space just a web browser i tested it and it works fine

Think i might just tell her to see how she feels with that she probebly will be proud as punch :p and would save alot of hassle

Then she might get more savvy and realize either

    a) i want a better laptop and treat herself
    or
    b) I should make this one better

Heh, I ran one of my folding machines on a linux live CD for about two months earlier this year. It works really well, although I eventually got my hands on a spare 20GB Xbox 2.5" hard drive for that machine and put XP on it, then took the DVD burner out of the folding machine so I could put it to better use :)

Giving birth, rearing you, feeding you, educating you, clothing you ..... > an old laptop and a new HDD. You make it sound like you are doing her a favor here.

Stop being a cheap son; spring for the HDD, install it, then give to her. Who cares what she does with it, or how she uses it. The only reason you were able to afford it, understand how it works, and develop a joy for technology is because of everything she ever gave gave/worked/saved/sacrificed for you. Seems to me, the least you could do is throw in a new HDD and not whine about it. It might be too much to ask for a "Hey, Mom, I love you so I fixed it up for you and I want you to enjoy it for the few more year it has left in it. Thanks for everything you ever did for me." and peck on the cheek.

Are you the kind of person who goes to the "what's ruining your life"-thread to point out how everyones' problems are nothing compared to the pain and suffering of millions in Africa? With that logic everything DeadP1xels ever has or does is thanks to his mum. Oh gosh.

And just try the live-CD option, that sounds like it should work.

Im afraid not everyones finances are as great as yours :thumb: you think i would have even made this post if i could have afforded it myself? the money is not an issue if i had it **** whats £23 to a family member? but having times when im so skint paying bills i have to go without things and £23 on a HDD is'nt on the top of my list believe me i wish it could be

Thankyou for a completely pointless comment  now surely if you had a drive, instead of pretending to be the bigger man you would have said "Hey mate for a tenner you can have this one i am not using" instead its "Im not going to give it to you but i'll say i would"

Im not after pitty its a thread, i whined im over it, the laptop is in the hands of my mother now she is happy and i am happy, and she can do what she likes with it **** she can chuck it out the window for all i care

im afraid its hard to be positive all the time you just have to make due take life as it comes and roll with the punchs :thumb:

So the laptop's going to your mum. What hard drive does it take, SATA or PATA?

If you give your parents your old tech, give it to them, and let go.

If you want to have control and ownership of your own tech, pay for it yourself, and insure it yourself.

Personally I don't buy into the "You owe your parents because they raised you for free and asked nothing in return". That's bull. You did not ask to be born. They put you in the world to fulfill their personal emotional needs. As such they have an obligation to raise you as best they can. That obligation ends however as soon as you are old enough to stand on your own legs. The world doesn't owe you anything.

then my dad chipped in saying "Theres no point cheaping out for £10 you're not going to get anything decent you might aswell stop being a tight ass and buy one new"

so got the one from scan with free delivery :) £23 ain't bad for a 120gb drive

It's your fault for getting money involved with friends/family. You can't be nice to someone and enforce the terms of a financial transaction.
