I've got a CD-ROM drive on my desk, plugged in and in pieces. How dangerous is the laser? What is the worst thing that could happen? If the laser shines onto my hand is that ok? What about my eye?

if it shines on your hand after 15 seconds you'll have a burnmark, if it shines in your eye... after 0.5 seconds you'll have lost 75% of your sight in that eye

hehehehe, nooo, it's probably that safety laser, it's just light so it won't do anything on your hand, and as it's that safety laser your iris or something will close before it can damage anything, ask cheese for more information I think he knows a great deal about them.

People who did the CD-drive window mod who left the lazer 'naked' to the eyes often said that after looking at the drive for about 60 seconds their eyes would hurt etc

    Thats a Class A lazer...

Its class C you want to worry about

If anyone saw that vets in the wild program the other day with the vets from vets in practice in america. Well they visited a turtle rescue center and they were using dangerous lasers to cut off tumors ... they were cutting thick flesh in seconds!! :eeek:

Classes of Laser go from 1 to 5.

Class 1 is a CD-ROM drive or DVD laser, or similar devices. These aren't desperately dangerous, but if you can avoid it, best not to look at it.

Class 2 is a laser pointer or a laser gun from laser games, like Quasar and Planet Lazer. These can do some damage to the eye, and considerable care should be taken with them, although they are focused to much greater distances (typically) than CD-ROM lasers, so the beam has to hit your eye directly, which is not the case with a CD-rom laser, which is focused very closely, so spreads out a great deal beyond that distance.

Class 5 lasers are used for cutting sheet metal. Not a toy.

I find they can be real dangerous if dropped from a skyscraper or thrown at pedestrians from moving vehicles.

Other than that, I beleive you would have to get your eye right up close for it to focus on your eyeball. After all how many of us are blind after the wonderful Playstation Swap disc trick???
    Oh, the days...

I want me one of those lasers used on some program on Discovery channel, by focusing the laser on a highly polished plate they could heat the air to such an extent that it exploded and shot the disk upwards over and over again, each blast sent the disk up about 1 metre, 1 drawback, the laser is the size of 2 18 wheelers! but hell! If I can melt some seagulls bring it aaaawwwn!!

think of the carnage, how many modders havent taken their moos out and trashed them? Think of the possibilities, all japala needs to do is hook up one of them to his router and he could cut aluminum in no time flat.

I never got blinded after swapping disks in my PSX :D

Did a bit of a "mod" with it...shorted the pins so the disk cover's connector is always pressed down

    lol
