The process of adding Ram is something that I haven't tried yet. I'm thinking of adding 256 Ram to boost my system to a 512 total. What's the procedure for adding ram? Hopefully my rig in the sig..
There isnt a "difficulty involved" its as simple as opening case, finding RAM slots, putting ram chip in, closing case and turning on, takes 5mins tops.
Adding more RAM couldn't be simpler. All you do is whip your case off and just slot the new stick of RAM into a spare RAM slot on your motherboard (usually long thin black plastic slots on to the right of the CPU running vertically down just to avoid any confusion ) the white clips at the end of the slots should be set to the 'open' position before u insert the RAM and should clip firmly into place in the sides of the end of the RAM sticks when the RAM is pushed properly into place. Boot up and there you go. Trying buying RAM the sam type and manufactuer that u already own to avoid any conflicts
1. Buy apropreate ram (what ever it takes sdram , ddr ....) 2. Turn computer off 3. Take side off case 4. Push ram in 5. put side back on case 6. turn computer on no. 5 is optional
There is the possibility of one catch though If you're using RD-RAM, you need to add the memory modules in pairs. If you have 256MB at the mo, you'll either have 1 x 256MB module and a blanking module, or 2 x 128MB modules. If it's the first option, just remove the blanking module and insert the 256MB module. If it's the second, you'll need to either replace the 2x128MB with 2x256MB, or add another 2x128MB. I don't think you can mix and match different sizes of RD-RAM.
its probably the easiest upgrade to do but its always wise to be wearing an anti static wrist thingy especially when handling ram
one tip.... make sure you take a look at the little notches..... the number of times I'ved tried to put ram sticks in the wrong way round...
As above.. DO NOT PUT DDR IN THE WRONG WAY ROUND!!! If you switch a board on with this ram the wrong way round the ram will get killed as will the DDR slot. Pins 3 and 7 usually get killed but its sometimes different. and yes. it CAN be done!
Never got that far as powering it up....i notice there in the wrong way round cos you can't get the little things to clip down properly
that was lucky then I have seen some scary boards that do allow you to clip them down fully though!!! They are most worrying! Ram is probably the easiest u/grade though. quite a performance boost for a small amount of money. All quite easy and fun
Great, pretty much covered on the Ram issue now, all questions answered.. thanks to everyone for feedback.
