Me and a friend made about $24k together on Diablo II. And most of that was over just a couple months. We'd have done it for much longer, but it has such a rediculously high chargeback rate that it's hard to keep a credit card processor. And this was shortly after I turned 15. Not an MMO, but the same idea. You have no idea how much it kicks arse to check your email after lunch and find a few hundred bucks in new orders sitting in your inbox. Needless to say, our hourly rate for being a student was pretty nice. Probably better than most teachers, actually.

there used to be a lot of this sort of thing going on in Star Wars Galaxies before all the new changes. Now that players have to actually hold a crosshair on the targets FPS style the amount of credit farmers has dropped.

The changes drove everyone away. I played it for about a year, starting Jan '04... but quit once the first combat revamp was announced.

I knew a guy on there who sold rare items he'd looted and credits for $$$, I don't know how much exactly, but it bought him his college education.

There are lots of different opinions on making money from a game. I don't see the harm in it, as long as they're not ruining your gaming experience. The better ones out there make it a business, and handle their customers in a professional manner...

    EQ

I played EQ1 for about 4 years in that time I think I must have made at least 750 quid from selling platinum, Also Anarchy Online was another good market when I used to play I sold one ingame item Prof Jones 15+ vest for $250 dollars and other various bits and peices. I wasnt out there farming items 24/7 this was just a result of tradeskills and lucky rolls on items so its easy to see if you have the time you can make a fast buck.

Since Job change I dont have the sane time to invest in playing MMO's like I used to hence why I'm playing WoW these days as its a fairly casual MMO =)

Gold farming to sell on to other players for real world money is the worst thing posible to do. All you do is undermine the games economy and newbie players who are forced to pay inflated prices due to the massive influx of gold.

To anyone currently selling gold; I hope you get banned and burn in hell!

I would agree with that - take SWG, SOE eventually upped the starting player cash from 10k credits to 75k credits (I think), due to the inflation. But with any economy, it's to be expected. I don't think a few players selling items and gold for real-world money is going to do a lot of damage to a game. It just splits the players between those who will grind out the credits, and those that will simply flex their plastic for it...
