    One thing I've wondered about, is wether or not removing the PSU from its box effects the sheilding in anyway. Afterall rogue magnetic and electric fields are not what you want anywhere near your memory/hdds.

    Anyone have any info on this? I was considering putting it in a perspex box instead of the ugly steel.

    the box tends to be connected to ground (to ground through the whole case).

    this will have to connect somewhere.

    I know in my PSU there is a wire going strait from the power connector to a ground bolt on the casing. The black wires are connected to ground by tinned traces around the screw holes on the PCB, so that means the whole thing is grounded and stopping EMI.
    Given that there are typically 2 transformers, and more inductors, I would guess that you would get more EMI in your case.

    I modded my QTECH 550W PSU as follows :

    * Removed all stickers
    * Installed a switch
    * Replaced fans with Antec blue LED ones
    * Made another small hole in the PSU to take the fan wires out as they will plug into my DigiDoc 5 unit
    * Cut off unused / unwanted cabling
    * Braided all remaining cables
    * Vinyl painted all the connectors black
    * Fitted rubber grommets for the 2 fans

    More details including pictures can be seen by viewing my Project Annihilator in my sig ;)

    Chopped off the 4-pin P4 power and ran them into small 2-pin headers for case fans, sleeved all cables and painted.

    Turned the case it lived in upside-down and fitted a 120mm Papst, a custom grille and an alu mesh dustscreen.
    (Want to add a socket on it for my pump next)

    [IMG]

    Stripped one of the first production w/c PSUs ever to enter the country and voided the warranty by modding the pump relay lead and changing the pipe fittings... :dremel: :D

    Had to swap these for wire grilles on every psu I've had. One day I'll get one with wire already fitted... :duh:

    I've desoldered all the leads for the ATX connector from the PCB of my 200w Shuttle PSU (that's going into my server project) and soldered in all the AT wires and connectors in place of the old ones.

    The project log's in my sig, but it really needs updating (I haven't even confirmed the existance of the PSU yet :eeek: )

    I've still to complete this PSU mod, however. The +3.3v line in the ATX connector isn't required by the AT mobo, so it's not connected to anything at the moment. I'm getting a 2.2 Ohm 7 Watt resistor from Maplin soon, though, to put a 1.5 Amp load on it. I'm also getting a 10 Ohm resistor to put a 0.5 Amp load on the 5V standby line.

    (the reason for all this is because all modern PC power supplies use switching circuitry, instead of big meaty transformers, and therefore every outlet from the PSU has to have a certain amount of load exerted on it, otherwise the PSU can become damaged after long periods of use)

    I'm also going to add 2 0.1uF capacitors (one for the 12v line and another for the 5v line) because the PSU makes some audible high-frequency noise when under load. Hopefully these caps will suppress the noise.

    Cut out the ugly pressed steel fan gril.
    Cut the side off ready to put plexi on it.
    Lost enthusiasm.
    One year later it's still held together with masking tape.

    removed all stickers
    sanded down with 80grit and wire brush wheel (for that Machined look)
    replaced 92mm with Quad LED blue fan
    trimmed all molex wires, crimped new pins and plugs on directly at vent slats
    custom run power rails to all components in UV 18AWG wires
    Server style (press in wires) Molex on all rails
    sleeved ATX and 12v Mobo lines

    Have an aopen 350w psu. Was noisy as hell. No pics... sorry! :blah:

    Done:
    -Removed cover. I'm using the psu without it.
    -Resoldered all the wires with blue wires.
    -Using 1 rail with 90deg molex plugs
    -Changed the ommagad noisy aopen standard psu fan with a transparent fan@5V
    -Have put the trafo in a little steelbox with one 50mm fan. This is to shield the rest.
    -Added a switch so I can use it to test things.

    To do:
    -Spraypaint the heatsink

    /edit God damn you Leif. Why cant you get out of my text!

    Done
    - Replaced the Jet Engine with a Panaflo L1A mmmmm...beautiful silence :D
    - Removed stamped fan grill and replaced with a tiny chrome grill
    - Extended the cabling and rerouted it so that its almost invisible

    To Do
    - Cut out a window in the side
    - Remove stamped grate at the bottom and replace with a nice window
    - Paint it black/metallic blue (decide when I get my case lit up)
    - Light in Blue with LEDs (Possibly Red, will decide when I get my case lit up)
    - Fashion a tool for removing the ATX connector using only a pair of nail files and a piece of wood!
    - Sleeve Cabling and replace molexs with UV molex plugs :dremel:
