    I have a Vantec NexStar3 External HDD Enclosure, and i noticed the Power Supply it has. Now i'm curious, how much power can these power supplies give?

    I know it was only meant to power a single HDD, but do you think i could run a HDD, DVD Writer, Card reader, and 120mm fan off it?

    Hard drives have a high start-up current; the card reader may be OK but other drives and a fan... :nono:
    It says on it. :duh:

    Watts = current x voltage

    so:
    5v = 7.5w
    12v = 21.6w

    Mine had a satisfying pop when I was pulling the plug outta the socket. That was fun.

    I bet the HDD, Card reader, and fan would be just fine running off one of those little external jobs. But keep in mind how much current an optical drive can potientially pull.

    Though 29 watts isnt all that bad. You can run a modestly configured pentium 4 based computer off about ~100 watts.

    a normal DVD burning device (my AOpen has it's specs on it's label)

    5V @ 1,2A
    12V @ 1,5A

    that leaves you with 0,3A on both 5 and 12 volts to feed your harddisk, card reader and fan... Don't think that'd be enough :p
