My first post so all help appreciated. I have a reasonable spec PC but am looking for increased frame rates. current specs are
    Biostar TP45 / Q6600 @ 3.2Ghz / 4GB DDR2 @1000 / 8800 GTX (not o/c)
Antec 900 / Corsair 850XT PSU and Corsair Hydro H50 CPU cooler / Windows 7 HP
Should I go LGA1366 with new Mobo / cpu / ram or GFX upgrade ATI5870. How out of date is my 8800GTX anyway?? Upgrade limit £400
    Thanks for any advice

the 8800GTX is still amazing, but is ageing now. Personally i would just add a GTX460 1Gb to your current spec and enjoy the rest of your cash! lol!

List the games that you play the most and you think could use more GPU horsepower. Only that way you'll receive relevant suggestions for your dilemma.

I'm relying on my 8800GTX to see me through the next three or four years :)(). If I didn't have to mess around getting a waterblock, I'd probably replace it with something in the 460 range. But it should see me through, it's a real workhorse and should still have a little overclocking headroom left if I turn my fans up and sacrifice noise.

Thanks for all the posts. In terms of games MW2, DOW2, mass effect2, gaming at 1650x1080. I've not tried overclocking the 8800GTX. Its a gainward with what looks like a reasonable cooler, runs mostly at 55 to 70DecC, thanks for all your comments, cheers

What monitor resolution do you run and, as posted above, what games do you play?

Yeah, that would work if he wasn't still using a 775 system that uses the P45 chipset.

Crossfire would/could be an option, but multi GPU set ups aren't really worth the hassle.

    +1

I got a GTX460 yesterday and it's an absolute beast. Quiet, overclockable and cool, not to mention stupidly quick for the price. It'll manage 30FPS in Crysis maxed out at 1680x1050 with 4xAA to put it in perspective.

i got an evga superclocked 8800gts g92 it was trying to break but i took cooler off and replaced thermal paste and its fine again, just got the memory clocked to 1000mhz and 700 core.
its been fine and still runs most game in medium or some case high game pending obviously and my res is 1280*1024 (19" lcd)

but in the likes of bc2 and even l4d2 it some times lags a bit with fire and explosions other than that its supereb got more thime out of it than i expected. also got that akasa vortex cooler for £10 keeps it as cool as the stock cooler when it was full power

The 8800GT and GTX will go down as legendary, for sure. They've had awesome shelf life.

My 8800GT is still going strong, so imagine the 8800GTX is running even better. The only game that really causes me difficulty is Civ 5 (apart from Crysis of course!), where I've had to turn down the settings to medium..... oh no! :D

I use the GFX card on a 27.8" TFT @ xxxx by 1200.
I do get lag in Sup Com 2 but that is due to my cpu I think (E6750 @ stock 2.66 GHz)
Don't have grysis so cant comment on that.

thinking about an upgrad to a 460 1GB will it make much diff? (I also fold where i hear its much better)

If you're going to upgrade wait for ATI's 67**, a recent leaked slide shows that the 6770 is going to be better than the 5850 (but slower than the 5870) :D.

LOL I fold too so ATI is out of the question untill they optimise a ATI GPU client,
but the original guy might be interrested tbh idk, since 104 Firmi is quite good.
Might wait for 480 + (512 I think you know when they get all the cores on the die to work and hopefully use a more power effiecent design)

460 768 is cheap now and worth a look in sli.

aside from that a second 8800 at 60 quid is worth a look.

for a single card (ie you dont have sli) wait on the new ati cards.
