The profile of e-sports are growing so rapidly. This could potentially take it to the next level if done properly.

For the best results the CPL, WCG & ESWC should pool their resources to make the transition smoother. Otherwise the standardisation process will be very difficult to pull off....it's never going to be supported by everyone. This could potentially be awesome though, I have my reservations however, simply because its been tried before on smaller scales and failed after only a short time.

Inevitably some of the Pro Gaming organisations will want to remain hardcore though. We might even start seeing Pro Gamer unions soon...The court sees Jonathan Fa1tality vs Abit! lol

maybe slightly off topic, but what games would you guys like to see supported? I mean how is this gonna work, most new games like BF2 etc. support persistent universe characters and obviously so do MMO's

Meh, I think this is somewhat pointless. Games are just that, games. If everyone in the world playing some game are all ranked, it will bring in a level of social class seen in society today. Like in MMO's where people are like " look at him, hes a n00b, hes only level 12, where Im level 26" and its all bullcrap in my opinion, because it says nothing of the person behind the character. FPS games are better at making everyone fair, but even then someone with 50 kills and 3 deaths thinks of himself above the level of someone with 3 kills and 20 deaths just because he has a higher score. Im sort of rambling here, but my point is ranking in games simply separates players more and more.

you realise this is ranking in official tournaments right?
its no different to any other 'proper' sport

just becuase theres an official ranking for tennis players doesnt mean you get ranked if you go to the park to play or something

and the fact is that someone with 50 kills and 3 deaths almost certainly IS better at that game than someone with 3 kills and 20 deaths
how they act towards each other is irrelevent to their actual ranking...

Didn't realize that. I thought it was for everyone playing the game.

Weither or not they are better is not the point, the point is that they will treat the person with less skill with less respect and see them in a lesser light. That point is irrelavant, because I thought it was for all gamers and not just gamers in tournaments and professional competitions.

its not like being better at the game automatically makes you an asshole
i've come out at the top of the scoreboard loads of times, doesnt mean i go round calling everyone noobs or effing and blinding at people
just some people are assholes, they'll bitch and whine whether they're winning or getting their ass kicked, makes no difference...

Ok, good point. I just think games should stay games, and that money hungry companies are trying to make it into something more than it is and should be.

As everyone knows quite a few CS servers already rank their players, the problem with this though is that although CS is a team game, people then rufuse to play it as one and ignore team mates/plans/objectives in order to do their own thing - generally camping behind some crate so they get easy kills and don't die - just so they get thier points up. I find this generally ruins the game and results in me using servers which don't rank players. Obviously one way to combat this at a higher level would be to rank teams, not players, but you are still likely to get similar things such as "let's play 100 n00b teams to get lots of points and refuse to play against any decent teams."

So, we are presented with a loose-loose situation? We must simply not rank at all, or enforce strict rules against people camping and such. Ban people for camping and exploiting the map, and make examples of people so that nobody else will be foolish enough to do it again.

I think the big issue is standardization. there are so many different formats, for instance within UT2k4 there a variety of gameplay modes, and within that a multitude of server options such as round time, weapon drops, maps, mutators etc. with games and formats (not to mention patches) changing all the time I would assume it would be a nightmare to try to get a consensus on standard formats for varying tournaments.

I suppose on team games the stat systems would have to be rather complex as simple things like hit % or K:d ratio won't show a true indicator of skill and the pro teams only play a handful of matches in a given tourney. I suppose the game Cs woudl be a good example if any of you have played cs on the competitive level as I have, the best player sometimes doesn't have the best stats and the M.V.P can be the guy who guards the same site everytime gets run over but manages to hold off long enough for the team to arrive. In my experience there are many intangible stats, such as good clutch players or good defense that can't be measured.

I suppose they could rank each team like they do in sports and have variables as to how they play on different levels and against opposing teams etc but even then there would have to be some standardization and most teams have massive turn over or are all-star teams put together for tournaments.

some games like bf2 have decent global ranking systems that show very detailed stats but that would seem to require a lot of standardization and unification amongst tournament organizers.

I suppose I would be curious to see how this would play out and I've been playing competitve cs for awhile now and had the honor of being owned by some of the best CS players in the country I guess it would be nice to see how we I stacked up, but I don't see a great difficulty in making it so global

i dont get what all the hype is about games are games, unless you are in comps that you may win money or get motherboards and zalman coolers named after you =p. for me i think pro gaming is a waste. takes to much time out of your life and it wont help you get a better job down the road, when you decide to get a job.

p.s. did anyone notice that it was posted at 13:37? or 1337

It would be "their" view, surely?

A side note on the camping thing: I always felt that FPS's ought to have an optional multiplayer server feature where if a player moves less than X distance over Y seconds, then on every other player's screen a loudly roaring fire would spring up next to them, their weapon would be replaced with a marshmallow on a stick, and great big arrows would point at them from the six cardinal directions.

Nezuki: UT2004 had this feature. If I remember right it would tell you where that person was. I think the time limit was 120seconds or something.

Nice little feature in that game, but I don't think the marshmallow would be appropriate. Just turn everyone into CHuck Norris
