I had an issue whereby the pc would only power-up momentarily. Thanks to some of you good folks on the forums I have discovered this was down to a short between the case and motherboard. The system is currently functioning normally, albeit with the mobo resting on a box.

I'd like some advise please on how I go about putting it all back together whilst eliminating the short?

    Thanks

Check you have standoffs in the case.
Check you only have standoffs where you have holes in the mobo to put screws through.
Make sure the mobo is lined up correctly to the holes & screw it in tight.

Not too tight though, I've seen people do some real damage from over tightening the screws.

I normally screw down till contact + around a quarter turn.

Also if your worried about the mobo being to close to the case you can get longer stand offs, these will give you loads of clearance.

Longer standoffs will prevent the motherboard from lining up with the backplate.

We a similar problem years back, some of the metal surrounding the hole wasn't earthed properly so when we screwed it in to secure the motherboard in place it would short. Now we could have just not used that standoff and the board would have been fine, but im a bit of a perfectionist and it was for a friend who paid me a fair bit of money to build his rig.

Anyways in the end we tried using some very small rubber grommets one of each side of the mobo to isolate it electrically. Worked fine! Lining it up with the blackplate was a bit more snug than usual but it done the job. Infact if you dont have any grommets use some cling film, its a little bit ghetto I know, but it does work.

Duct tape or electrical tape to cover the offending short?

Just wanted to say a belated thanks for all the replies. I had inadvertently left an additional post in that was causing the short.
