ah a little light reading informs me that x86 = 32bit (why for that number?!) and x64 is obv 64 bit! so enjoy 64 bit applications accelerated by your 64 bit optimized CPU's ;)

    EDIT: too late..

For those wondering why it's called x86, the Intel 8086 is to blame :D

I think it was a reference to the core instruction set originally.

One of my lecturers reckons its to take the piss out of 68K assembler.

The x86 comes from Intel. They started a new architecture with the 8086, and then the 8186, and then the 8286, the 8386, the famous 8486 (also known as just the 486), and the whole architecture was named 8x86, as those three numbers were always the same. They've changed the name to Pentium, and then to Core, but it's still the same architecture, so it's still x86.

AMD added 64-bit support to the x86 specification, and called it x86_64. Intel adopted the standard with their EM64T extension, and Microsoft calls it all x64.

So, in conclusion, x86 Windows is 32 bit, and x64 Windows is 64 bit.

Yeh intel were very quiet about the fact that the core 2 duo's are 64-bit, its almost as if they didnt want to humiliate AMD anymore than they had done lol
