im using a computer at the library, and they have access to local programs blocked. I would like to bring my laptop in and hook it up to one of the open RJ-45 jacks in the wall. the problem is i need to configure the network settings, now i can find the IP address of the computer easy, the problem is i need to find the DNS/DHCP server address or name that assigns IPs to the machines as well as the work group or domain names for the network. and l;ike i said they have all local program and most hard drive access restricted, i can understand why, but noone here is able to tell me what i need to know to connect my laptop to the network, apparently all the networking related services are outsourced. so what i need to know is, is there a way to find : DNS/DHCP server address workgroup / domain space name and proxy address's without being able to look these things up using the windows tools on the system. The machines here are running win2k. would it be posable to use my laptop WinXP Pro, and go into the MMC and find these things through the varius tools in the MMC by having it monitor a remote system? or is thewre someplace on the web that would be able to sniff the hard drive and find these things for me. or is there a program that would fit onto a floppy disk that would do it <--- not prefered but ill take what i can get. thanks guys and just to say it so there is no doubt in your minds, no im not looking to gain unathorized access the librarian already said i could hook up my laptop but when i tried it couldnt retrive an IP and when i asked for the information she just kinda looked at me funny, you techs no what im talking about, that look where their eyes glaze over and you trhink there brain is going to slid out their ear. thanks again for any help you can give me.
DHCP Server addy... If you configure your network card for DHCP, it will look for any available DHCP server on the network. DNS will be configure automatically by the DHCP server so you won't need that. Workgroup / domain... As long as you're not browsing the local network, you shouldn't need this. If you need to browse the local net, you will have to get that from the network admin. The only place that I know it would be is the network settings inside of Win2k. Proxy server addy... If you have access to the toolbar on the library's computer, you can get it from there. Go to TOOLS >> INTERNET OPTIONS >> CONNECTIONS >> LAN SETTINGS for IE6. I can't remember exactly what it is for IE5, but it'll be similar. If you don't have access, when you get the proxy login page, try to right click on the page to see the server addy.
If the sysadmins have any sense, they won't have the spare RJ45 jacks patched into the switches, so you'll have to unhook one of the existing PCs in order to plug your laptop in. They probably also don't allow Internet traffic out without a valid username and password. Be aware the being on someone's network without their permission is a legally questionable thing to do. When I say 'their' I mean the people who admin the network, not a librarian. If the librarian doesn't know enough to get you on the network, it's probably because it's not their decision to make. I admin a council network that includes several libraries and I'd be annoyed (to say the least) if you jacked your laptop into the network and started sniffing around. You have been warned
Draxin its people like you that f**k it up for the rest of the network. If what you want to do is allowed then phone up the IT support to get your answers, if it isn't don't be an a**hole. I see it when the network starts playing up and people moan only to find out some **** added there 2k server with kazza (and loads of virus) to the network so they can use a feature of it. Then plead they didn't know, what do they expect I just make them wait 5 days next time I'm called out to fix their problem.
stealing county bandwith = naughty. If I caught someone doing that in "My" library I'd........ well I'm not sure, but they wouldn't be there for long.
herbs go lick a phone cord, i already asked for permission to use my laptop on the network and they said it was ok, but they were unable to give me the information to hook up. so if you wana go talk crap read the whole friggin post before you open you gaping maw. as for the proxy addy, i tried that but that was locked down too. and im not going to steal band width, i need it so i can get my resorces for my paper. i need the book references and the internet references, but i have dial up and home and it takes too long to sift through 100+ search results per item. and i tried calling the network support number but they were closed. im not going to be running kazaa or other file sharing. god what is with you people. when the hell did this stop being bit tech and start being HARD OCP as for the spare RJ-45 jacks in the wall they are hot. i tested them. well one, and it was hot. so my guess is they all are. i used to work at this library so they trust me and i them, but i wasnt there when they put the network in. so to any of you out there that wants to talk smack step up and get shut down. and for those of you who are asking "why not just use the machines there" is because the only way to save something on them is to floppy and i dont have a floppy in my laptop. pluse they arent for writing papers and i dont want to take up a station if i can bring my own. oh yeah HERBS once again, go lick a phone cord. i only asked about DHCP/DNS server finding and Domain is because when i pluged in i didnt get an IP. there have i justified myself to you.
No offense was intended chap... least not by me anyhow. Perhaps if you'd mentioned some of the stuff from your recent post your initial post, you wouldn't have got the replies you did. I mean, when you say you want to be on someone's network but can't figure out how, people do tend to presume the worst, rightly or wrongly. Cheers Kata
so even though i have justified my request no one is willing to help? i guess i can understand that, since the same information could be used to help a person gain unauthorizedaccess to a network. oh well i guess i will figure it out on my own, thanks anyway
