Fund i gave/invested all my savings lost more than half of it in the stock market. Luckly i dont need it right now, but its still scary to think that all my savings are currently worth less than half of what they used to be. Got no problems besides that, parents are starting to cut down on expenses though.
It depends myself or my family. It's going just fine for a 17 year old kid working at a engineering firm as a draftsmen. I (the place I work) design high performance aluminum curtain wall windows for schools, colleges, residential and commercial building, stadiums... But like some have said work is off and on sometimes. Last week they needed me as much as they could get me and this week I was making copies and asking anyone if they needed help just so I could get hours. As a family not terrible but we've cut back in some areas. My dad is unemployed but he has his own small business that has been filling his day. My mom and brother got raises not to long ago and there hours are staying pretty steady
We're okay for now, both of us are teachers and our jobs look secure provided everything picks up in the next couple of years. I'm over run with work because I also tutor maths privately which has proved very lucrative as everyone seemd to be thinking of their kids' futures at the moment. Because of the forthcoming wedding we had no exposure to the stock market only cash so we've just seen the interest on our savings fall but we've not lost anything. My father will be okay, he has his own surgery (dental technician) and has survived many recessions, my mum teaches learning disabled kids to cook and her job is solid. He lost a packet on the market but will stay in for the long haul. In the mean time his business provides a steady income, he has paid off his house and my mum brings in a second income (just don't mention retirement; he was planning to wind up the business in 3 years time but his pension and shares didn't do so well). My brother lives in a converted truck on an organic farm, lectures for 3 hours a week and helps to run community projects for kids in deprived areas. For him the recession is just a story in the papers.
Doing well it seems. I dont own a home anyway, nor do I have any debt, so fotunately I'm doing well. Don't earn allot so I certainly dont loose allot. Still enjoy myself as much, but I don't drink, I do enjoy a good fish supper. Keep life simple as possible is my view. Oh and don't watch the news. Most of the time they are saying things now that were starting months ago. The news makes money remember out of sensationaising things. They profit from making things look bad. When the news comes on I flick over to the Simpsons. Not burying my head in the sand, but the news is when I see petrol prices creeping up before my own eyes, or when the price of a museli bar has doubled. Thats the news that affects me.
I got a payrise that starts on the 1st April, and because people need to eat, i'm in a rather good place to be. Sam
Actually, even in retail I am pretty secure. I happen to sell EXTREMELY well, to the point of if I left people would call corporate to see why.
Faulty logic. A) when you cut labor costs, you start with the expensive people. The ones with a few years and higher packages. B) companies that make products don't just freeze, they know that there is an up turn on the way, so the product cycle continues. if they just stopped, they wouldn't have anything new to sell when people start to buy again. So you have a few things gong for you. Once they ditch all the expensive people, they will want to reset the pay scale with worried grads like you who will accept less. and most consumer product companies are actually lining up the ducks for a year from now.
I'm going to be made redundant as of mid-April. If I'm lucky I may well be starting a new job a few days later - fingers crossed.
Got made redundant last year, but found a new job. Been there around 6 months, everything is fine and dandy. Company just announced it’s raising the dividend they are giving to share holders, plus the stock is rising. Relatively unaffected by the recession so far.
One parent is now unemployed - although it's not like the parents need the second income. My father's business has done immensely well in the last few years and they paid off their mortgage about 10 years ago. I'm ok, got a relatively secure job in a department that is under staffed. Biggest costs to me recently have been the move closer to London with higher living costs. But it's still manageable and for the view I get in the mornings it's worth it.
I got made redundant from my software engineering job at Raymarine last December and I haven't found another job since. There are simply too many people chasing too few jobs so employers are taking their time to cherry pick the appropriate candidates. I've been turned down for many positions because my five years solid C/C++ development experience simply isn't enough to secure me an interview. Companies are now starting to ask for people with a minimum of a masters/Ph.D from one of the top four universities or they will not even read their CV. Laundry lists of skills are getting longer with required skills including commercial experience of 4+ languages, in depth project lifecycle experience, mathematical modelling, UML expertise, OpenGL knowledge, etc... To say the software engineering market is brutal at the moment is understating the scale of the problem.
Yep, pretty sure, and, i could even have a further increase by having a small argument with my line manager and argue the point i have raised a pay grade from 2 Bottom, to 2 Middle. We'll see how it pans out. I'm not sure what kind of joke i should be attaching to that small line, although, my mind is wondering towards a rude joke of sorts. Sam
I got laid off of after almost 3 years and I have more money in my bank account then ever before lol... $3000 tax refund. $300 refund check for iono what $340 state refund $1400 financial aid. and soon I should be receiving unemployment covered 100% by Fry's Electronics.
I'm final year *shakes fist* I'm hardly eating anything, but if I were to do a regular shop for myself it'd be pretty pricey. Doesn't help that my girlfriend broke up with me at the start of the year, it's often cheaper shopping for 2 people and there's less wastage. Rent has gone down to £200 a month so that's ok I suppose.
can i live with you? looks like it would make more sense to move to london as thats where most of the design job reside. well been working 3 weeks freelance, this guy might be taking me for a ride as my boss has only paid one of my weekly invoices. ************ better show me some love today or things could go postal.
Things seem to be going well, I recently took on a new position at work and the role appears more secure than ever. The company I work for are generating greater profits this year during the media hyped downturn than the previous year. We have also taken on around 500 extra staff with more to come.
Seems like I'm the only person to vote.... anyway, I'm better off, as are the vast majority of small business owners I talk to, it seems only the bigger businesses are really affected, but then most of them seem to live in debt, and pay their directors stupid money. The worst part about the recession (in my opinion) is the poor people who get made redundant because these big businesses run the way they do. It really pissed me off that the government wouldn't bail out woolworths, yet they will bail out car manufacturers, so many jobs were lost because of that
