A colleague of mine has an HP laptop that was bought a couple of months ago and she needs to connect a monitor to it using the HDMI socket. But the HDMI cable won't fit because the socket looks like this:

What's going on with that weird black plastic bit at the bottom? Has anybody seen this before and know what needs doing to make an HDMI plug fit?

Unfortunately I don't have access to the laptop, so I can't tell if it's something that can be just pulled out. I'm pretty baffled as to why it would be there in the first place. I've seen HDMI socket covers before but this is new to me.

    Thanks.

can't see the image so hard to assist.

Perhaps post the model and we can have an more informed idea.

That definitely shouldn't be there. Either it's part of a broken socket protection cover (unlikely), or the laptop has has the bottom service cover opened and then carelessly closed at some point and this is part of the chassis that's become misaligned and trapped outside.

It's definitely not part of the socket!

Not sure why the photo wasn't working for some people. Anyway, the laptop had recently had some repair work done and it appears it wasn't put back together properly. The repair shop had another go and managed to get it right this time. Mystery solved. Thanks for the help.

It's likely set to private, shirty's a mod and sees all.

Sorry, didn't even think of that - I just assumed that the OP had fixed the link when I replied.

    Glad it's sorted though :thumb:

Looks like it has been opened up then assembled wrong, you can even see the contour of the bezel rises from the USB port!
