OK, i know this technicall isnt a sff question, but i want to build a htpc setup.

Which software/hardware is best to recieve and record freeview in the uk, and record by choosing the program from tv listings.

OS is not important, im happy to use windows or linux (allthough not media center edition as i cant afford a prebuilt system).

Form factor is not important either. I need to buy: motherboard, cpu, ram, vga and tv card. But i want hardware that will be compatible with whichever software i choose, for example freevo.

    Thanks in advance.

Have you read the latest column on the front page? I think not :p lots of links in there for software.

As for freeview: there are a couple of cards out, and obviously smaller is better for HTPC setup ;) you dont want a honkin tower screaming with fans next to ya telly :D

theres one link, to showshifter, which i didnt find to be that good.

So far I think i've narrowed it down to mythtv, running on fedora, with a hauppauge wintv nova pci (maybe usb). I will be using a tower anyway, I allready have the case, psu, hdd's, optical drive etc...

I just wanted to know if anybody had a "tivo alike" setup, and could share their hardware setup and software config with me.

You wont be able to get freeview on it unless its got a freeview reciever card in it. Does the hauppauge wintv nova pci card have it?

If you want to go the Windows route i'd recommend XLobby :) You can make it look however you want, though it's not as easy to configure as myHTPC (though easier than MythTV :p).

Here's a few of my screens for XLobby (very much in development though, and this is using Jowaldo's skin):
