    :duh:

I was playing with a wrench. Inside a power supply. That was plugged in.

And them big heatsinks DON'T have a common ground as the PSU chassis.

Worst part about it? My mom was trying to call someone, and that's one of the first things he heard.

^Exactly. Worst part out of it all? It was an uninsulated, el-cheapo comes-with-project wrench!

We all do retarded things sometimes and then instantly think, why on earth did I just do that?!

Do I spot an Arduino in the top pic? :)

And sad times when a PSU dies :(

You do realise voltages of 300Vdc upwards are present in these supplies?

Glad to hear you are ok.

I very nearly died many years ago when I did almost the exact same thing, but it was a flat head screwdriver instead of a wrench. I don't remember much about the incident, I was knocked unconscious. I only remember removing the case from the PSU after I had hot wired it to turn on.

The aftermath was a bit more destructive in my case, somehow destroyed a 15 amp breaker along with the power supply. Along with some electrical burns and memory loss.

Please do be careful in the future, and again, glad to see you lived to post about it.

Glad to hear you're okay! If anyone is going to do this, for modding or whatever reason, it's important to realise that it's not even enough to turn the PSU off and unplug it. You should never ever, even think about opening the casing without discharging it first - a hell of a whack is still stored in the PSU after it's switched off. To discharge it, unplug the PSU but leave it connected to your PC for a few hours having cycled the power button a few times. Even then it's worth using insulated tools.

Gotta give you +++ rep for having the bottle to post your mistake on here knowing the ribbing you will get from most of us,As already said happy to see you survived matey I once got thrown across a room after accidently shorting out the HT on a valve HF amateur radio transceiver 900v @ 20 amps while testing to find a fault so be careful when you are working with electronics

I've had a flashbulb capacitor discharge into my left arm into my fingertips.
Best example for feeling is having rebar shoved up my arm up to my shoulder then yanked back out in a split second.

    Yes, that is an arduino.

And yes, those are floppy drives in the right side of the pic.

    Put 2+2 together...

I know that exact feeling- I was making a DIY tazer ( why not?.. :worried: ) from an old disposable camera and poked n the wrong place; the sensation that shot up my arm was so bizzare, made me throw my tool across the room as I pulled in away & dribbled everywhere as I yelped. Won't be doing that again...

Nah, 'what happened' to me was having my skull nearly crushed in the sliding door of a Bedford Mini Rascal; I was such a nice, quiet boy up until that point...
